On Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus with his family by his side. Dear husband of Joan (nee Smiley) and loving father of Robert. Also survived by his sister Ruth Barrie and brother-in-law Roger Smiley (Brigitte) and nephews Tim and Jonathan Smiley. Iain was born in Scotland in 1947 and moved to Canada at the age of six. It is some years since I was in touch with Iain. It was always like that -- years between meetings, then occasionally running into one another all the time, then not again for a while. I always thought -- and hoped -- there would be another round!

I am so sorry to hear of his passing and extend my deepest sympathies to the family. Iain was always good for a stimulating debate, a wide-ranging conversation, usually on politics or theories of journalism, and for laughter-filled meetings.

Best wishes,

Tony McLean

I was so sorry to hear about Iain. I knew him at Chambly County High School in St. Lambert. We were in the same graduating class (Grade X1-1 in 1966)and he was ALWAYS VERY kind to me. I remember seeing him at Algonquin years later and even then he remembered me and had kind words. I am sorry we lost touch over the years, but I will never forget him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time.

I am so saddened by the news of the passing of one of my all-time favorite profs, breakfast buddies at the Newport, Facebook friend and supportive cheerleader of life in general. This man, a true teacher, will be missed.
In 1997, Iain taught me, a big expectant mom-to-be and newbie to the public service, Writing for the Media at Algonquin. To this day, my writing is guided by his deftly encouraging pointers. I delivered my daughter the same day as one of his classes, something he never forgot (maybe because I had a decent excuse for missing an assignment deadline?). When that young daughter shook his hand on being introduced to him years later on Saturday mornings at the Newport and when that young lady graduated from high school last June, he seemed to beam with pride in his congratulatory words as if his connection to her had begun in that class and he known her her whole life.
That's how Iain Barrie was: genuine, warm and considerate, as big-hearted as he was in life.
You taught us well. Take rest, young man. You've earned it.

Dear Joan and Family: I extend my sympathies to you all. I had the pleasure of working with Iain at the National Capital Commission, and I don't think a day went by that he could not make me laugh about something. It is many years since I was in contact with Iain, but I can only think he would have been a wonderful teacher and mentor. Joan, I hope I am correct in recalling that Iain and I shared a love of Knowlton's Landing, where your family had a cottage? Iain was one in a million and I am so glad I did get to know him.

Iain was a talented man, a good friend, a joker at times and a pleasure to know. He did me a few favours while a DJ but the best was when he sold me his Ranchero. He will be missed. Margaret and I offer our most sincere sympathy to his family. RIP Mr. Barrie
