Paul DOLE Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Nov. 23, 2015.
DOLE, Paul D.
Paul Damien Eymard Dole died at home on November 19, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. He was a man for others whose guiding philosophy was inspired by the French diplomat and dramatist Paul Claudel who wrote, "what value does life have if not to be given." Paul was a generous heart who changed the lives of many people around the world. A bibliophile, he saw the creative genius in everyone. Born in Melbourne, Australia on May 27, 1941, Paul was a citizen of the world, yet always Australian. Predeceased by his parents Lucy Ellen Dole (nee Green) and Herbert John Dole, as well as his brother Peter Julian Eymard Dole. He will live on in the hearts of wife Patricia Mary Marsden-Dole; sons Gregory (Eliana) and Thomas (Nicole); and grandchildren Rennie, Marlow and Beatrix. Survived by brother David James (Gabrielle); uncle to Simone, Matthew, Anna and Tim as well as dear sister Hilary Mary Sullivan (Ross), and nieces Catherine and Angela. Survived as well by sister- in-law Vilma Dole, niece Lucy Ellen, brothers-in-law Harold Marsden (Kathy), Bronwen and Gaelen, and god-daughter Koby Rogers Hall. We would like to thank Dr. Lisa Aldridge, CCAC staff and services and Father Vincent Pereira for their constant attention and concern for us during this difficult time. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor), Ottawa on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, 95 Somerset Street W., Ottawa, on Thursday, November 26 at 10:30 a.m. Reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to C.C.S.A.C., 507 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON., K2P 1Z5

Dear Patti;

Gavin and I were just thinking of you and Paul and were very sad to learn of Paul's passing. We remember meeting him in London and what a joyous person he was. We also remember how kind you and Paul were to our daughter in Portugal when she had her documents stolen.

Paul was an exceptional person and a you were a exemplary pioneering Foreign Service couple.

We are very sorry for your loss.

Dear Paddy, Greg and Thomas - I'm so sorry for your loss. Paul, as well as each of you did so much to make David and I feel welcome, safe and a part of your family when David and I found ourselves working in Tanzania post university. Although Paul and I chatted only infrequently over the past 25 years since Tanzania - each time I spoke with Paul it felt like we were sitting in the same room. He definitely knew how to make people feel comfortable and how to push them (without really pushing) to see and get the best of themselves. I will miss him. Please look me up when in Toronto - perhaps I can introduce you to my family as you did for me all those years ago.
Best,
Nirvaan

I only had the great privilege of meeting Paul over the last few years. He reached out to me at the globe idea with a story idea and thereafter remained in touch, often with new ideas, and unfailingly with humour, erudition and grace. I often felt about Paul that he knew or had met or had a delightful story about anyone of any consequence, going back decades. He was very much of the old school, civil, respectful, but full of a light, dry humour that made him endearing. I wish I had known him sooner and better. My condolences to the family, may his memory be a blessing,

Thank you for having shared Paul with us. We remember that no natter whom we asked about, no matter from where in our world, he had already befriended that person and had could recall and share some story of their life. It ws a game we could not win! No one was a stranger to him. We know how much he depended up your Paddy and family, and what loving support you provided through to his last breath.
You could have done no more. with love Penny and Bill

Dear Paddy, Greg and Thomas,
My deepest condolences and prayers. Paul was a great man and we will all miss him very much. I knew him as a true friend, always with a sparkle in his eye and a story on his lips. Every week he was quietly doing something good for someone else. Through Paul, I got to know you and am grateful for the privilege. Greatly I have missed you all since leaving Ottawa. But loss, especially in this case, comes with happy memories of a life worth celebrating.

Paul left a lasting memory with me in the late 1990's when I was visiting Patricia when she was posted to Lisbon. She left for an official dinner and Paul kindly took me in hand. He showed me a documentary about Laurie Lee, and talked that evening about Lee's book "As I Walked Out One Summer Evening". He left me with an enduring interest in Laurie Lee, and an indelible memory of his generous and welcoming charm. My sincere condoleances to Patricia

Paul was a man of compassion and grace. He always fought for the underdog and spend a large amount of his time helping strangers that needed his help, often going to their homes to give them a helping hand. He cherished his family and friends and was a natural leader. He has left a void in our hearts but I was one of lucky ones who was able to call him my friend and mentor.
