Catherine BECKER Obituary
At home, with her family on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the age of 56 years, after a difficult six-year struggle with breast cancer and leukemia. Cathy was the beloved wife of 32 years of David and cherished mother of Jennifer and Sandi. Cathy was predeceased by her parents John and Eunice Monaghan and her brother Terry. She is survived by her sister, Maureen, and her brothers, Larry (Joan) and Dan (Jackelyne), her sisters-in law, Kate Delmage and Helen (Rick Miskelly) and her brother-in-law Gordon (Barbara), as well as 12 nieces and nephews. Cathy also will be deeply missed by her aunts and uncles, numerous cousins and her many friends, especially Donna and Ian and Marlene and Bill. Cathy will always be remembered for her zest for life, her love of adventure, including jumping out of airplanes, and her incredible spirit in the face of adversity. Her positive outlook and her ability to live her life to the fullest, particularly in the last year of her life, were an inspiration to all who knew her. The family would like to thank Dr. Splinter, Dr. Sabloff and his team in Module L, all the staff in the Medical Day Care Unit and on 5 West at the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital, and the nurses and caregivers from Bayshore Homecare for all of the heartfelt and attentive care they provided during Cathy's illness. A special thanks, also, to all of the family and friends who supported Cathy in her final journey by driving her to appointments, and providing meals, gifts, cards, phone calls, e-mails and visits. Your kind and generous support were all greatly appreciated. The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road) on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service in the chapel at 3 p.m. Her family would appreciate donations to The Hospice at May Court, 114 Cameron Avenue Ottawa, K1S 0X1 or a charity of your choice.

David, Jennifer and Sandi, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your wife and mother, Cathy. Cathy and I met around 30 years ago when we emigrated to Canada. Cathy and David were our neighbours and they were super. Cathy was a great help to me. She always invited me in for coffee and we had some great laughs. I found Cathy to be a great mother and wife. She was a good friend. I admired her courage and honesty. We lost touch for many years, but thankfully I met her again this year for some time together. It was a great but sad time. Thank you Cathy for giving me the time to meet you again. Thank you for your courage. You are indeed an inspiration. I will miss you very much.

Donna and I have been thinking about your family so much the past few days. We are very saddened by Cathy's passing, but also for the great loss for your family. Over the years we've known Cathy and all of the family we came to learn what a wonderful friend and second family we had in Ottawa. Cathy was Donna's best friend and a person that she could always turn to when she needed sound advice along with the love and caring that you knew came from a friend. Donna and Cathy's mothers shared similar experiences in their later years and Cathy helped Donna through so much in that respect. Both Donna and I know how very fortunate we are to be Cathy's and your friend. After having done so much for us, we are sad at what little comfort we can offer at such a difficult time for all of you. Dear family: Cathy and I had built a strong bond the last two years after Bob got sick and passed away. She was my rock in my time of need and I had become hers! I am so sorry that Cathy has gone. I met her in 2006 in a breast cancer support group, Stepping Stones. She had such a zest for life and wonderful sense of humour despite the ravages that the treatment took on her body. It is unfair that her family had to lose her at such a young age. My sincere condolances of the loss of your wife, mother, friend, etc... I knew Catherine from Shoppers Drug Mart at Southgate. Every time she would come in we would talk and I really enjoyed her company. Then one day she told me about her illness, and how it progressed. When I did not see her anymore I thought that she was gone but only to know that she was holding on and battling this disease the best way she could. She had a very strong and positive attitude that I admired about her. I will surely miss her talks, and her smile. May she rest in peace and God Bless to you all.
