CLIFFORD, Charles Edward, PhD
Passed away at home on January 22, 2013, in his 83rd year, with his family by his side. Charlie was the best friend and cherished husband of Ann (nee Jennison) for nearly 60 years. Loving and much loved father of Gordon (Roslyn Bern) and Karen (Norman Thuswaldner); grandfather of Jeffrey, Andrew, and Gregory Clifford, and Sarah and Jessie Thuswaldner, in whose lives he was a most active and beloved presence. Charlie was the adored big brother of Frances (Ken English) of Petawawa, and dear uncle to Stephen English (Frieda Graham) of Sudbury, Pam Caldwell of Parksville, B.C. and Catherine (Bob Butterworth) of Perth. Lovingly remembered by Nancy Clifford. He was the devoted son of the late Thomas Clifford and Henrietta Reid (Lunam).
Charlie enjoyed a wonderful life with his wide- ranging curiosity, boundless energy, irrepressible good humour and love of family. He was a graduate of Carleton (BSc) and McGill Universities (MSc, PhD). Following a distinguished scientific career with the Department of National Defence that he found most fulfilling, his busy retirement involved devouring books, weekly excursions across the countryside with his birding friends rain or shine, doting on grandchildren, volunteering at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, winemaking, socializing with the many friends he and Ann made and kept across the years, bicycling, sailboat racing, and travelling the world with Ann. However, most enjoyable and precious to him, with camera always close at hand, was his time spent with his family, whom he loved so much, and who now celebrate a life so well lived.
The family wishes to thank the Hematology team at the Ottawa General, and the exceptional and compassionate care and support provided by the CCAC team and A-1 Nursing.
Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd.), Nepean on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 3 to 6 p.m. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or to the Bone Marrow Transplant program at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus, to which Charlie and the family remain forever indebted for having saved the life of his beloved grandson Jeffrey, would be appreciated.
Condolences, tributes or donations may be made at
