von HERFF, Christoph
After a brief illness, Chris von Herff died peacefully on February 8, 2013 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa. He was 81. Beloved husband of 51 years to Elisabeth von Herff (von Ritschl), devoted father to the late Karin and Michael (Sheila McIntyre) and a doting Opa to William, Silas and Lucy. Chris was a man of great charm, warmth and generosity. He is predeceased by his brother Alexander, and his parents Elsa (Petter) and Fritz. Born in Germany, Chris von Herff's story mirrors that of so many millions who came to this country after the Second World War and whose energy and purpose have contributed to the prosperous, open and diverse Canada we have today. Arriving in 1952 with little money but big ambitions for a better life, he built a career in the industrial materials business that culminated in his founding of Alphatherm Inc., a company that has flourished in the 30 years under his leadership and that of his successors. Chris saw business as a vehicle for contributing to the greater good, especially through his tireless work as a Rotarian – an organization he served for nearly 40 years. He was a man who always sought to help others and usually found a way to make their lives better. He loved great conversation, the laughter of his grandchildren and the company of good friends – ideally enjoying all three together in the farmhouse that he and Elisabeth lovingly renovated in the woods of the Upper Ottawa Valley. He will be missed, but his family is grateful for the time they had with him. Funeral services will now be held at The Grace Lutheran Church, 14 Bonnechere West, Eganville, ON on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 11 AM. In memoriam donations to SOS Children's Villages Canada would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to The Whelan Funeral Home, Ottawa tel. 613.233-1488.
