Daniel SLACK Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Mar. 18 to Mar. 21, 2013.
SLACK, Daniel
Dan passed away at home on March 14, 2013, at the age of 67. Loving husband and soul- mate of Judy (nee Wielgut) for 35 years, proud father of Greg and Steve. Dan was born in Brockville, graduated from Queen's University, and taught Physical Education with the Ottawa Carleton Board of Education for 33 years. Teaching students gave him great pleasure, and he enthusiastically spent many hours coaching wrestling, rugby and football. Both Dan and Judy had a love of the land. In 1980, they bought a farm in Osgoode where Dan derived a sense of satisfaction from growing corn and soybeans. The camaraderie while golfing, playing hockey, hiking with his buddies in England, getting together at the pub on Thursdays, and just visiting with friends brought joy into Dan's life. His friends will miss his sense of humour and the certain way he had of making everyone comfortable. Most important to Dan was his family. His greatest source of pride and joy was watching his wonderful boys grow to be fine young men. Whether travelling the world or staying at home, Dan and Judy were best friends, just happy to be together. The family will receive friends at the

Memories of Colonel By are very foggy to me but I always remembered Mr. Slack and the impact he had on me. RIP

April 2, 2013

Hello Judy and family, my condolences on your loss. I have never met you but Dan was often in my thoughts. We lived around the corner from each other in Brockville. Dan was one year ahead of me in High School and it was he that invited me up to Queen's for my first 'football weekend' We ended up living around the corner from each other again when I too ended up going to Queen's. It has been 40+ years since we last saw each other but that certainly doesn't diminish the impact of his loss. He was big, kind and gentle. Again my condolences. John Truyens, Lyndhurst

Dear Judy and Family,

It was of great sadness I heard of Dan's passing. I remember a fun, loyal, strong and remarkable individual from my youth. I had an extremely high respect for Dan. Throughout our high school days in Brockville, Dan always brought a laugh, helping hand or a pat on the back to all his friends. Dan was the steady and calm force either on the football field or what ever situation we found ourselves in.

Although many years have passed since we saw each other, Dan was always in our thoughts. I feel honoured to have known Dan and to have him make an impression on my life.

How very sad to hear this. I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember Mr. Slack from my days at South Carleton HS way back in the 90's. I recall that he was a kind man and always said hello to me, as he knew my dad through teaching. I lost my father last month to pancreatic cancer, so I know all too well what a terrible disease it is. His legacy will be carried on through you, his family, and through all the students whose lives he touched over the years. May he rest in peace.

Dear Judy and Family,

I was saddened to read of Dan's passing this week. My heart goes out to you and your sons.

I have wonderful memories of our time together as young teachers at Colonel By Secondary School where we were colleagues for 18 years. Dan was highly regarded by his students and the staff as a teacher and a coach. He had a wonderful, dry sense of humour which I always enjoyed.

May your many happy memories of Dan sustain you and your family at this sad time.

To the Slack family, please accept my condolences on the passing of Dan. Mr. Slack was one of the reasons Colonel By was recently voted the best school in Ottawa. A core of exemplary educators opened the school in 1970 and I was in the first cohort of Grade 9 students.

I remember Dan as a teacher who never raised his voice in class but who had a quiet, firm control of his students. He had an understated, dry wit that was above the understanding of most Grade Nines. Intuitively, I felt he was a caring and committed teacher and I enjoyed being in his class. The teaching profession has lost one of its best.

Dear Judy, Greg and Steve,
Dan had a refreshing vision of how old timer hockey should be played and enjoyed. He joined us for breakfast where we exchanged political views, old stories, travel experiences, etc. Dan didn't realize how much he helped others with his ever present wisdom, wit and point of view. Thanks, Dan, we're better for knowing you!

Judy and family: Saddened to learn of the passing of a favourite OTHS phys ed teacher. I'll never forget a day in gr 13 Health Class. He was in the middle of teaching and suddenly whipped a chalk bruch at two guys in the back row who had been chatting. After yelling at them, which was very uncharacteristic, he paused and asked us all to take our pulse......an instant lesson on "flight or fight" response that the guys had been in on. BRILLIANT teaching technique. My sympathies all of you.

My sincere condolences to the entire family. Mr.Slack was a special teacher. Smart, funny and selfless. On the field, many are capable of coaching, but he had the ability to teach. 30+ years later, the lessons remain with me. I will always admire and appreciate everything he did. A great man....forever.

Judy and boys,
I sit here at the same desk that I know Dan used during some of his finest years. His time at Colonel By was marked with incredible enthusiasm and generosity to the studdents and athletes here in our formative years.
I know he had a huge impact on my life and choices and I thank him deeply. Working with Dan years later in the Association gave me even more proof that he was a kind, thoughtful and dedicated educator throughout his career and beyond.
Great sorrow is felt by many who have learned of his passing. Social media today allows us to reach out and so many have responded to my posting, this represents just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to Dan's contribution to so many.
My sympathies to you and yours in this time of loss. May you find comfort in knowing his time with us left a lasting influence on all who knew him.
