CASTLEMAN, Eileen (Elias)
CASTLEMAN, Eileen (Elias), on June 21, 2017 at the age of 91. Cherished mother and best friend of Julie. Devoted Nana to her adoring grandkids Jacobus, Jeremy and Jillianna (Voorneveld). Lovingly remembered by her son-in-law James. Predeceased by her husband David and sons David John and Peter. Eileen will be remembered for her generous spirit, love for her family, her sense of humour and her bright, cheerful outlook on life. Born in Ottawa, she quenched an early sense of adventure serving as a "Wren" in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service during the Second World War. Afterwards, she spent a decade in California, working for Hollywood movie producers Harold Hecht and Burt Lancaster. She returned to Canada in the 60s, married and raised her family in Chelsea, QC. She later worked for the Ottawa Board of Education, including many years as secretary at Rockcliffe Park Public School. Eileen was an active member of the Chelsea- Gatineau Hills community where she lived for 50 years. She was named Chelsea's Citizen of the Year in 1996 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to community life. After her grandchildren were born, she devoted herself to being World's Best Nana, and by all accounts succeeded superbly. A service to celebrate Eileen's life will be held on Monday, July 10 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church, Chelsea, QC. Those wishing to make a donation in Eileen's name, please consider St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church (www.anglicansinthehills.ca) or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
