CARPENTER, Elaine Sarah October 25, 1923 November 27, 2017 Retired Missionary, Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso, Africa. Elaine was born to Lynn and Myrtle Berdan of Malta, MT, USA. Raised on a farm on the drought-hardened prairie during the 1930s, as a girl, she committed her life to Jesus Christ at an old fashioned "revival" meeting. Always motivated by her desire to share God's wonderful love to others, she trained and served as a nurse with the Sudan Interior Mission in several African countries. She met and married Charles Carpenter, a lawyer and pastor from Ottawa in 1958 and they continued together in Africa in Christian ministry, serving for almost 30 years. Elaine and Charles had five children, Gloria (Chris Davidson), Ruth, John (Betty Carpenter), Carole (Brian Senese), and Paul (Karin). She was predeceased by her loving Charles in 2003, and then more recently, by the last of her seven siblings. Elaine slipped away peacefully from the arms of loving caregivers at St. Patrick's Home in Ottawa, into the presence of her loving God. We wish to express our thanks to the many people who shared in Elaine's life: staff and volunteers at St. Patrick's Home, Harmer House, Carling Day Program, ParaMed, resourceful CCAC coordinators, and loving, faithful friends. Visitation will be at Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery 3700 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, on Saturday, December 9, from 9 to 11 a.m.; Funeral will take place at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment in Capital Cemetery. Gifts in lieu of flowers would be gratefully accepted by St. Patrick`s Home, 2865 Riverside Dr. Ottawa, ON, K1V 8N5; or SIM International (formerly Sudan Interior Mission), 10 Huntingdale Blvd, Scarborough, ON.
