Eugene GREEN Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Jan. 30 to Jan. 31, 2012.
GREEN, Rev. E. Eugene "Jeep"
January 3, 1927 - January 27, 2012
Rev. Jeep Green passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Park Place Retirement Residence in Ottawa on Friday, January 27, 2012. Heart-felt thanks to all his caregivers, especially to Dr. Louise Coulombe and Mrs. Hélène Kruidenier.
"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others", Pericles, 435 BC. Jeep Green has woven his special grace, caring, compassion and wisdom in a life dedicated to supporting others. A beacon of civility, sincerity and uncompromising credibility, he has left a real legacy as a man of conviction, who lived without fanfare, working to relieve uncertainty, fear and make his part of the world a better place.
Jeep was a devoted and beloved husband to Joy (Clegg) for 59 years, a loving father to David (Susan) and Katherine (Bruce) and an outstanding grandfather to Sebastian, Katie and Laura. Predeceased by parents and sister, he is survived by his dedicated step-sister, Patsy (Vic). Jeep met Joy at Trinity College, University of Toronto.
They both earned BA degrees in 1950 and married in 1952. Launching his career in the Anglican Church in the 1950's in rural Saskatchewan, the young couple started Anglican ministry in the diocese of Qu'Appelle in Saskatchewan in 1953; first in Weyburn and then between, 1954 to 1957, in rural Raymore district where Jeep had to drive isolated dirt roads to deliver services and minister to folks in five widespread parish churches. Suffice it to say this was not a picnic in Saskatchewan mid-winter. This was not the job of an ordinary man. Jeep and Joy returned to Toronto in the late 1950's to minister at St. Agnes, Long Branch. Their next move was to Ottawa, where they would remain. Jeep became minister at All Saints Church in Westboro between 1962 and 1968. He practiced a committed and disciplined approach to worship. He was characterized by an innately generous, loving, understanding and compassionate approach in serving God's mission. This strength supported countless people in times of joy and in times of personal crisis. He conducted great weddings and meaningful funerals. Between 1968 and 1979, Jeep was Chaplain and a teacher at Ashbury College. He was a natural in this role; he has a legacy of providing sound advice and guidance to Ashbury students. Jeep was a consummate trustworthy council, fostering self-esteem in vulnerable students, offering them opportunities to make good choices, communicating encouragement and positive feedback. Such actions generated long-lasting impact on many individuals. After a rewarding time at Ashbury, Jeep took leadership for several years at the Temple Pastures Retreat Centre, a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa in the Gatineau Hills. Temple Pastures offers renewal of mind, body and spirit - a great mandate for Jeep to deliver on. Jeep was involved with many other community organizations in Ottawa in recent years. Dear to his heart was supporting quality education for youth. For example, during the 1990's, Jeep was chairman of the board at Venta Preparatory School where students are provided an environment designed to allow them to achieve their full personal and intellectual potential.
Jeep Green's positive influence has indeed been woven into the lives of many. We have all been incredibly privileged to have known this unique man. He is physically gone, but he will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and all the many, many people he touched, his spirit shining into the eternity. Friends may call at All Saints Anglican Church, 347 Richmond Road, Ottawa on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. until time of service in the church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to, Venta Preparatory School, 2013 Old Carp Road, Ottawa, Ontario K0A 1L0 would be appreciated. David, Katherine and everyone in the Green family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the words on this guest book will bring you some comfort. I knew the Reverend Jeep Green through my days at Ashbury and got to know a little bit about his compassion, his genuine decency, his love of God and his hours of unselfish service to others through those days. He truly was a remarkable man.

Dear Joy and family

Jeep was in our lives at All Saints at the most critical times ministering compassion when my Mother passed away, providing the last rites to my Dad and marrying our daughter, he has a very special place in our hearts, I am just so sorry we are out of country and cannot be there to express our thoughts personally.
He truly was a beautiful person, we were so fortunate to have known.

sincerely

Dear Joy, David, Katherine and families:

I just received the news of Jeep's passing. No words will likely help the sadness and sorrow you bear. However, from across the miles, I wanted you to know that you are all in my thoughts.

I have fond memories of Jeep during my years at Ashbury College – including the two Mediterranean trips he chaperoned. Jeep was someone you could whole heartedly trust and go to in times of needing someone to talk to and / or share life's adventures.

I was fortunate to know Jeep and yes he will forever be woven into my life.

Bon Courage!

I will always remember the Rev Green from Elmwood. He would come over and do prayers. I also got confirmed by him. Mostly, years after I left Elmwood, I will always remember when he and Mrs Green came to my grandmother's funeral. It was such a wonderful surprise to see him there. He said he came because he knew that my grandmother had raised my sister and I and he knew she was a big part of our life.
The strange thing was last week my mother died and I kept thinking of Reverend Green- it was so sad when I read the paper and found out he died a week later and what is more sad was that he was in the same place as my mother, and I never knew.

My deepest sympathies to the Green family.
