Robert MacQuarrie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 13 to Jan. 15, 2007.
MACQUARRIE, Robert Waldron "Bob" Q.C., B.Sc., LL.B. November 24, 1926 - January 11, 2007 Still working and in his 81st year, Bob died suddenly at home. Born in Rexton, N.B. Bob, his wife and young family, relocated from the Maritimes to Gloucester, ON, in 1954. Beloved husband for over 55 years of Eleanor (MacMurdo) and cherished Dad to Maureen (Peter Foulds, Toronto, ON), Bill (Marcia), Debbie (Cold Lake, AB), Marjorie (Frank Derickx) and Doug (Donna). Special grandfather to Fraser, Philip, Heather, Kate, Amy, Malcolm, Cameron, Leah, Conor and Duncan. Predeceased by his father, the Reverend Dr. Waldron A., his mother, Annie (Auld), his sister Louise Whalley and his brother, Walter. Survived by his step-mother, Janie (Georgetown, PE), his sister-in-law, Doreen (Dartmouth, NS), his aunt, Kay Wood (Charlottetown, PE) and numerous cousins. Also missed by Eleanor's brothers and sisters-in-law in Kelvin Grove, PE (George "Bud" and June, Ian and Wanda) and by his many nieces and nephews. Between 1959 and 1985, Bob served the citizens of the Township of Gloucester, the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (RMOC), the Provincial Riding of Carleton-East and the Province of Ontario in the varied roles of: Township Councillor, Deputy-Reeve, Reeve, Hydro Commissioner, Police Services Board Member, Chairman of the School Board, Ottawa-Carleton Regional Councillor, Member of Provincial Parliament, Parliamentary Assistant to the Provincial Attorney General and a later, additional appointment as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Provincial Solicitor General. During his time in public office, Bob's most significant achievements included: organized suburban planning (such as the Orleans Official Plan); The Township of Gloucester Act (requiring increased 'green space/parks' in subdivisions above the amount required by provincial statute); expanded recreation services (significant increase of Gloucester's parks and recreation services); compulsory smoke detectors in new and existing multiple dwelling units and single family homes; capital project funding (significant provincial funding for many capital projects in the area). In 2004, the County of Carleton Law Association honoured Bob for 50 years of distinguished service as a practicing lawyer in Ottawa. In late August 2006, Ottawa City Council passed a motion to permanently rename the Orleans Recreation Complex in his honour. He was a friend and advisor to many. Bob will be remembered for his exceptional generosity, modesty, wisdom, principles and deep rooted sense of community service. Decades of service complete, daily trips 'to the office' no more, and willing hands now at rest. Forever in our thoughts, he will be dearly missed by family, friends and colleagues. In accordance with his wishes, he is to be cremated, and buried in Prince Edward Island at a future date. Come and share your memories as we celebrate his life on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Pine View Golf Course, 1471 Blair Road, Gloucester, ON, between 2:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa General Hospital, CNIB or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Dear Eleanor & Family

We are so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a wonderful friend and neighbour, and so very helpful when we bought our home on Westpark in the 60's (and again when we sold in '97.) He and I had many pleasant conversations when we rode the bus into town - or when I gave him a lift driving down to work. Bob was always ready to give freely of his time and advice to help others - and will be missed by all who knew him.

Joanne, Christine, Karen and Sarah join us in expressing our sympathies.

Dear Eleanor and Family,

Bob was a very special man, and we shall all miss him very much. Pat and I remember how much he helped us when we set out to buy our first house, on West Park Drive in Blackburn Hamlet. The bank was none too keen on giving us a mortgage, until Bob put in a good word for us. Suddenly, the bank was happy to be of help! We have never forgotten that kindness.

John worked with Bob on the Board of Trustees of Rothwell Church, and learned to respect his thoughtful opinions. He never rushed to judgment, but always carefully considered his response before offering his opinion. The world would really benefit from more people like Bob!

Our sympathies to you, Eleanor, and to all of your family.

Dear Eleanor and all the family : I am so very sorry to have heard (belatedly and at third hand) of Bob's death. He was so good and so helpful to Don and to me as our lawyer and, I hope, friend from our first arrival in the Hamlet in 1967. Where did those forty years go? Don died in 2003, following our return to Canada from that foolish move to England. My thoughts and deep sympathy are with you all. Jean

To the MacQuarrie Family:

It is with great sadness that we have learned of Robert’s death. He cared about and helped many, many people. As a former publisher of, and reporters for the Gloucester Guide and Orleans Courier community papers, there were numerous occasions where Bob spent considerable time and patiently explained things for us in order that we could write and print stories as accurately as possible for residents of Gloucester. This small anecdote serves to illustrate just one of Robert’s efforts to serve his fellow citizens but unquestionably there are many more such deeds that could be related by hundreds of others.

Eleanor, Debbie and family.

We wish to offer our sincere condolences at this very sad time for all of you. Although we only had the opportunity to meet Bob a couple of times (in Cold Lake and in Ottawa), we immediately enjoyed and appreciated his sense of humor and gentle manner. We could see where Debbie inherited her unique character, sharp intellect and her determination and commitment to complete the task at hand. As a lawyer, I admired Bob's devotion to his profession and his continued desire to serve his fellow man as along as possible. I'm glad I took the time to phone Bob a year or so ago, just to talk and to tease him a little bit about never retiring. I told him he was a "legal machine" and that there was always work for him when he visited Cold Lake. Today you must all feel extremely proud as you share wonderful memories with so many family, friends, colleagues, clients and citizens. He was truly an amazing person who touched a multitude of lives.

Dear Eleanor and Family,
It was with a sad heart that I learned to-day of Bob's passing. I enjoyed so much working for him, as the Manotick representative, during various elections at the Regional and Provincial level. His
unselfish giving of his time, knowledge, and energy made our community a better place to live in. His sense of humour and warm smile got us all through some hectic working days. We all knew the great love he had for his family. Eleanor was Queen of his heart for over 50 years. I last spoke with him a few years ago and was not sure if he would remember me. He laughed and said that of course he did. I now will always remember him. My deepest sympathy to each one of you

Eleanor, Debbie and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. At a time when I was "lost" in Ottawa, and had no family nearby to help me gain my footing, the MacQuarries opened their doors and gave me a sense of belonging and that I had someone to turn to, which meant more to me than I can express.
Knowing your sense of family, that is surely what will get you through this difficult time, and is such an amazing legacy for Bob to have left behind.

Dear Aunt Eleanor, Children and Grandchildren
My heart goes out to you during these days of grief and mourning and I only hope that good company and amorous thoughts of Uncle Bob will pull you through. It is during a time like this that we remember the little things and the man behind all of the great achievements; we remember a loved one, a father, a grandfather and a friend. We remember the Christmas', the birthdays' and most of all the hugs. So remember the hugs, give a lot of hugs, and accept this hug from me as sign of my affection for Uncle Bob and for yourselves. While I greive the passing of a great man, much like yourselves, I take even more pride and joy in knowing that I had the opportunity and pleasure to know such a person in the first place. So it's with Happy memories that we/I remember Robert MacQuarrie. Warmest Regards, Virginia

Our deepest sympathy during this difficult time. It has become clear while reading your father’s obituary that he was a very accomplished man with many fine attributes. January 14, 2007

Dear Debbie and family,
I am so grateful that Brent and I were able to visit you in your lovely Ottawa home, this past summer. We experienced, first hand, the MacQuarrie family's great hospitality, and care for others. This was especially apparent in how quickly that care was extended to help problem solve complicated funeral needs for a friend of ours. In such a short time we felt what others have described; Bob and Eleanor created a home where people feel truly welcomed!
That visit gave us opportunities to better understand our wonderful friend Debbie! We learned of Bob and Eleanor's work ethic, dedication to their family, work place and community. The benefactors of this good will are too numerous to comprehend. One thing we know for sure is that the good that was modeled has rippled out into ever increasing circles, changing and improving the lives of others. Our community in Cold Lake has benefited from this too, as Debbie has modeled and taught those great values to hundreds of children over her long teaching career!
Bob will be remembered for an amazingly accomplished career, for the change he brought to his community, but most importantly, for the long reaching effect of his strong and loving family, an effect that will impact generations yet to come.
Brent, Kristin and I want to express our heartfelt sympathy to each of you. May God grant you peace and comfort in the wonderful memories you have of this kind and generous man.

Debbie, I'll pass along the wisdom of a young man you know well. His words may give you comfort as you move into tomorrow. This Christmas, Graig wrote me a letter telling me that he had made a donation in his Grandfather and Grandmother's memory. In the letter he said, "Gram and Grand can look down and be proud of the heritage they left in the form of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. This is their greatest achievement and we won't let them down." If you could ask your Dad what his most important achievement was, I think he would agree with Graig - It is you.

My deepest sympathy Mrs. "Mac" to you and your family. Mac was an exceptional man who gave much time and effort toward helping his fellow man. I kept in touch with him and will miss our occasional talks. I would like to post the following poem that I wrote for my twin brother and which, I believe, 'talks' about Mac.

God looked around his Garden
And found an empty space
He then looked down upon this earth
And saw your tired face.

He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain
He knew that you might never
Get well on earth again

He saw the roads were getting rough
And hills were hard to climb
So He closed your weary eyelids
And whispered "Peace Be Thine"

It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
