REV. FATHER ROGER GUINDON, O.M.I.
former Rector of the University of Ottawa
on Saturday, November 17th, 2012
at Richelieu, Quebec in his 92nd year
Born in Ville-Marie, Quebec, on September 26, 1920, he was the son of the late Aldéric Guindon and of the late Germaine Morisset. He joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and on September 29, 1946 was ordained a priest. He was professor of moral theology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Ottawa where he lectured from 1947 to 1951 and from 1954 to 1964. Dedicated and efficient, he assumed the positions of secretary (1958 to 1961) and dean (1961 to 1964) of the Faculty of Theology. A public relations person, he was Rector of the University of Ottawa from 1964 to 1984 and, in 1965, presided over the establishment of the new University of Ottawa. He was named companion of the Order of Canada and received the Order of Ontario, l'Ordre du mérite de la culture française du Canada, the Order of the Pleiades and nine honorary doctorates. He was a member of some forty associations, councils of administration and boards of directors and assumed the presidency of many of them. He leaves behind to mourn his brother André and his sister in law Anne Dussault, his sisters Thérèse (late Marc Légaré) and Françoise (late Pierre Laplante), his sister-in-law Denise Grimard (late Guy Guindon), many nephews and nieces and the members of his religious community who held him in the highest regard. Friends may pay their respects at Sacred Heart Church, 591 Cumberland Street, Ottawa, from 2pm to 6pm and 7pm to 9pm Friday, November 23rd and from 9am to 12pm Saturday, November 24th. A prayer service will be held in the church on Friday, November 23rd at 7:30 pm. The funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Church Saturday at 2:00 pm. The ashes will be interned in the cemetery of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate at Maison Notre-Dame in Richelieu, Quebec. Donations may be made to the Roger Guindon Scholarship Fund at 190 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa, ON K1N 6N5. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Coopérative funéraire de l'Outaouais.
