TIMOTHY ROURKE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 24 to Jan. 25, 2013.
Elementary School Principal

With family by his side, Tim was called into the presence of his Lord, on Monday, January 21, 2013. At age 46, his 3 year struggle with sarcoma came to a peaceful end. The loving husband of Leigh-Anne (Carmichael), cherished father of sons Brendan and Taylor of Abbotsford BC, much loved son of Marilyn and Edward Rourke of Ottawa, dear brother of Pamela Hogg (Stephen) of Calgary and Jeffrey (Kari) of Boston. He will also be sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Born in Ottawa, Tim graduated from Sir Robert Borden High School (Nepean, ON), Trinity Western University (Langley, BC), Houghton College (Houghton, NY) and Western Washington University (Bellingham, WA), all leading to a Masters Degree in Education. He served as principal of Ocean Cliff Elementary School (Surrey, BC). Tim was passionate about children, and believed a quality education included activity, fun, and respect of others. He loved reading, sports, technology and outdoor life. He regularly shared his enjoyment with family and many friends.

Tim's faith in Christ was the foundation of his daily walk and the lens through which he looked at life. In Ottawa, he attended St. Paul's Presbyterian Church and in Abbotsford, Ross Road Community Church. The prayers and support from these congregations has greatly impacted his life, and the lives of his family.

On Saturday, January 26 , 2013, a Memorial Service will be held at Ross Road Community Church. The family wishes to express sincere thanks for the prayers and support of many friends and neighbours in Ottawa, Abbotsford and elsewhere.

It was yesterday when all of sudden Mr. Rourke popped-up in my head. So I decided to Google his name in order to get in touch with him. When I was informed about the news (yesterday), I was devastated.

Mr. Rourke was my 7th grade teach at White Rock Elementary School. He has taught me the guitar, which he would always have it with him. He taught me how to me a man. He SHOWED me the ways to live my life. I remember him saying he loves when his past students come visit him. I visited him a couple of times about a years after I graduated from W.R.E.

On the day of my elementary school graduation, I remember being very excited. Then Mr. Rourke came up and told me to wait until I graduate from high school. He said the happiness will be tripled. In 2010, the day of my high school graduation, the first person that I remember was Mr. Rourke because that day, my happiness was tripled and Mr. Rourke was 110% correct.

In 2005, I moved to Long Island, New York. Mr. Rourke asked me to come visit him for the last time before I left the beautiful town, White Rock. He prayed for me and my family. I also remember Mr. Rourke telling me about his life in the east coast.

Right now, I am a musician attending Berklee College of Music. And I am here now happy, because of Mr. Rourke.

Dear Mr. Rourke,

I know you probably can't see nor hear this (I HOPE YOU DO!)
But, I just wanted to let you know that I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU!!!!

You have changed my life completely and I would like to thank you for being my six-string friend :) - by the way, I still have the shirt that you signed.

I can't wait to see you and your guitar in Heaven!

Sincerely,
Jason Ha

I was just going through old district emails and I discovered Tim's name. I didn't know Tim well but I remember being a teacher on call at his school in Cloverdale, BC. At that time he was a VP. Anyway, I had applied for a position at the school where he worked. Tim and the lady principal interviewed me. I was so nervous but tried my best. I didn't get the job, but when I was at the school another day to substitute teach, Tim called me into his office. He told me that I should keep up the great passion and ideas I had for teaching. He encouraged me that if I kept that up, it wouldn't be long until I got a permanent teaching position. I can't tell you how much that encouraged me!! That meant so much coming from a VP!! I didn't give up and I did eventually end up getting a wonderful permanent position. I found out that we both graduated from TWU and I assumed he was a Christian, as I am too. His thoughtfulness was a real testimony to his faith in Jesus Christ. I am so sad to hear about your loss but so glad for the amazing legacy Tim left behind.

My uncle was my giant, my courage and one of my biggest supporters. He could always see the good and the light in everything and is a part of my better choices. I look forward to seeing him again one day and making him proud. I'll also never forget his last words to me and how they make me laugh yet feel safe and like he's always watching over me. The Rourke presence in my life will forever be cherished. Love always.

So sorry to hear about Tim's passing. We were L.I.T.'s together at Pioneer 30 years ago, and I still remember his joy in life and his great sense of humour.

Mr. Rourke was by far my favourite teacher. His passion for teaching showed everyday and touched many students at White Rock Elementary, myself included. He will be dearly missed, but not forgotten.

Larry Offner just posted about Tim in the OPC Alumni on Facebook. My wife Fiona and I are both so very sorry to learn of this news this morning, and sorry that we lost touch with Tim and Leigh-Anne after their wedding - not knowing that they were living so close to us. I remember Tim so well from Ontario Pioneer Camps and Pioneer Pacific, and Jeff and their parents. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May God's peace that passes understanding be your strength.

Tim is rejoicing in the presence of his Lord. I was not fortunate to know Tim, but his dad, Ed, and I were friends when we grew up together in church. My prayers and best wishes are with you. When you're out in BC, please connect.

Thoughts and prayer come to the Rourke family. Even those who didn't know Tim were praying for a miracle. May God overwhelm you with his peace and comfort and may your memories overwhelm you with the love you shared.

I was a student of Mr. Rourke's 16 years ago, in my grade 8 and 9 years. I remember distinct conversations clearly from that time with him. I respected him a lot. I remember in a volleyball practice he affirmed me in front of my team as someone who preforms well under pressure. I had never heard that before. Now as a business owner and a mom I have to tell myself that "I can do this" often. I'm not sure I would know how much I can handle if Mr. Rourke had not affirmed that in me so early. It really was his spiritual gift to discern needs and affirm character and leadership in his students. I'm feel so lucky to have had him as a mentor at that point in my life. I am looking forward to thanking him in person when I see him in heaven.
Praying for your family during this very sad time.

I met Tim last year at Jeff and Kari's home in MA. It was quite obvious that his love for the Lord was and is his foundation. I am thankful for having had the chance to meet and spend some time with him before he left this earth because his life touched mine very deeply. I rejoice in knowing that such a godly man was in the school system. Our children need more men like him impacting their lives.
My prayers are for his precious children, his dear wife, and the rest of the family: "May God be near to you during these hard days of sorrow, may He be your comfort and your hope. May each of you rest in Him, hold one another, and know that one day you will all be reunited. Amen"
One final word, "Thank you, Tim, for being a witness to the love of Christ to so many children who otherwise might not have "seen Him" had it not been for you being the hands and feet and love of Jesus to them. I am sure you are reaping great rewards in heaven."

Love to you all, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, who are mourning the temporary loss of this beloved man!, Mary Ann

We have known TIm since his college days, watched him marry his sweet wife, and as teachers in Surrey, have observed the inspiring example of leadership he has set in our school district. Throughout the years he has always been an encourager to others and affected others with his positive attitude. Most of all, he lived a life that glorified God. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

My Mom just let me know that she had read the obit in the Ottawa paper... Tim and I were buddies in Gr12 and 13 at SRB... a very good friend that was always there for support. I am so very sorry to hear of the shortness of his existence - I am sure that he will be as missed in BC as he was when he left Ontario. My sincere condolences to his family... Mr. Rourke, not sure if you remember me from high school days, but big hugs your way.

Although we didn't personally know Tim, we have been impacted by his journey. My husband was fortunate to hear him speak at a men's bar-b-que and was in awe of what strength and gentleness Tim possessed. Our children school with Tim and Leigh-Anne's boys, and also feel the sadness that his loss has brought. We will continue to lift the family up in prayer as they begin this new path, knowing that God's power and grace will be sufficient.

Mr Rourke taught my grade 8 gym class. At the time, I suffered from severe major depressive disorder, a diagnosis that isn't overly common in 13 year olds. I was completely unaware that life could be different. Because of Mr. Rourke, I ended up being accurately diagnosed. I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have made it out of my teenage years alive if such a diagnosis wasn't made when it was...I always felt as though Mr. Rourke saved my life.
