It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald on Tuesday February 25, at the age of 85. Predeceased by his loving wife of 45 years Mollie McCunn, Don leaves behind his loving wife of 14 years Elizabeth "Betty" McGuinty and his six children Paul (Sharon Ferguson), Susan (Bruno Seguin), Patti (Rusty Miller), Katie (Laurie Smith), Tim (Marie Bordeleau), John (Andrea D'Amico); and grandchildren Morgan, Alexa and Riley McCunn, Conrad, Katie, Anne-Marie, and Pierre Seguin, Katie and Allie Miller, Stephanie and Margaux McCunn, Patrick, Eric and Mollie Smith. Born and raised in Montreal, Donald graduated from Loyola University and then the University of Ottawa medical school in 1955. He spent two years at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, and then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victoria in Montreal. He and Mollie moved to Ottawa where Donald set up his practice as an Ophthalmologist in 1961 and remained active to this day, most recently with his friends and colleagues at the offices of Dr. Peter Agapitos. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He taught as an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa and most recently held the position as Professor Emeritus after 30 years of teaching. Don supported many charitable endeavours including the Medical Friends of Peru, an Oblate mission in Peru, where he donated not only his time but also his medical skill and attention. He was a President of the charity and in 2008 was made an Honorary Oblate and received the Oblate cross of Fr. Joseph Birch, OMI. Don valued family and friends above all else.
