HODGINS, Gerarda "Gardie"
After a long battle with cancer, Gardie Hodgins passed away on July 2, 2014. She died peacefully in her own bed surrounded by her close family. Gardie was born in Telok Batong, Indonesia on July 17, 1937 to Dutch parents. After spending her childhood in Indonesia and her youth in the Netherlands, she joined the Dutch Foreign Service. Following postings in Karachi and Cairo, she took a posting in Ottawa in 1963. Soon after, she met her soon-to-be husband Peter Hodgins at the Rideau Tennis Club. Peter was the love of her life, her best friend and constant companion for nearly fifty years. They married in 1965 and had three kids-Ed, Brenda and Peter Jr.-by 1969. In 1967, they moved into their house on Roger Road where Gardie would spend the rest of her life tending to her beautiful gardens, caring for her many pets and spending time with her loved ones. For her family, neighbours, friends as well as friends of her children who often "adopted" her as their mother, Gardie was a shining example of a life lived with love, laughter, playfulness, enthusiasm, kindness, generosity, compassion and openness to the world. She will be deeply missed, but we know that we were blessed to have her in our lives for as long as we did. Gardie is survived by her devoted husband Peter; her three children; one grandchild (Maya); her Dutch siblings (Elly, Theo and Kathy) and many, many friends. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 3:00 p.m. As an expression of sympathy donations to the Wild Bird Care Centre or the
would be appreciated.
