ROTHSCHILD, Patricia (Patsy) Esmée
(nee Magann)
On July 3, 2014, peacefully at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital after a long struggle with Alzheimer disease. Dearly beloved wife of the late Major-General Robert Phineas Rothschild. Daughter of the late George Loranger Magann and Grace Isobel George. Sister of Pamela Rachel Magann (Parry Sound) and the late George Plunkett Magann. Loving mother of Michael Robert (Kristin), George Emmanuel (Kelly), Jonathan Andrew, Esmée Ann (Larry) Rothschild Jones, Alison Mary (Phillip) Rothschild Green. Loving grandmother of Nicholas, Maïa, Erica, Jeremy, Alex, Rebecca, Samuel, Jamie, Erin and Tessa. Patsy was born in Toronto on June 12, 1924. Her father, G.L. Magann, entered the Canadian foreign service during the Second World War and was Canadian Ambassador to Greece after the war. It was while the family was in Greece that she met and married her husband Robert P. Rothschild, the Canadian Army attaché in Athens at the time. She and Robert returned to Canada to Kingston and then Ottawa. In 1959 they moved to England for 3 years while Robert was stationed in London. As much as any military family could set down roots, they always thought of Ottawa as home and returned there in 1962. When Robert fell ill in 1969, Patsy went back to university and eventually graduated from the University of Ottawa with a post-graduate degree in Library Science. She worked with the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, Algonquin College, and the Public Service for many years as a librarian before retiring finally in the 80's. She and Robert built a house out in Macdonald's Corners where they lived until Robert became too ill to stay out in the country. Shortly after Robert passed away in 2000, Patsy moved into a retirement residence back in Ottawa. She enjoyed spending time with her family, art, classical music, nature, and especially wildflowers. She and Robert spent many days hiking across the countryside of Lanark County, paddling down streams, through lakes and marshes hunting and photographing local flora. Patsy was much loved by all her family and many friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to extend our thanks to the staff of the Rockcliffe Retirement Residence, Forest Hill, and of Retire at Home who did so much to improve her quality of life during her final years, and the staff of the Queensway Carleton Hospital for the wonderful care they gave her in her final days. Family and friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Sunday July 6th from 10 am until the time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 12 noon. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
