William SCHNEIDER Obituary

SCHNEIDER, Dr. William (Bill) George NRC
Passed away peacefully in Ottawa on February 18 at the Age of 97. Husband of Marjorie (formerly Clarkson, née Brown) in their 30th year of marriage. Survived by two daughters, Judy Saunders (Ray) of Ottawa and Joanne Schneider (Robert Spurrier) of Highland Grove, Ontario; his grandchildren, Kristen Bassett (Matthew) of Ottawa, Ryan Connolly of Toronto, and Trevor Connolly of Ottawa, and great grandsons, Liam, Rhys and Miles. Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Jean Purves. He will be missed by his sister, Margaret of Ottawa, other relatives across Canada and friends. Bill had a distinguished career in science at the National Research Council. His pioneer work in research on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) led to widespread use of diagnostic imagery (MRI) and was recognized at the opening of the W.G. Schneider Building at NRC for NMR research. He was President of the National Research Council from 1967 to 1980, a Fellow of the Royal Societies of London and Canada, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. A memorial reception will be held at the Reception Centre of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre of the Beechwood Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Saturday, February 23rd from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Tributes may be sent via Lifetime at www.beechwoodcemetery.com. Donations may be made to The Ottawa Mission or a charity of your choice. Bill's family would like to thank the Whitton House staff at the Garry Armstrong Home for their caring support.

Mrs. Schneider and family. My hearfelt condolences to you on the passing of your beloved Bill. As you may remember,Bill was the first Board Chair for our little company Philom Bios in 1981; his wise counsel and wide experience in the sciences were instrumental in laying the foundatiions of our ultimate success. He was a gentleman of kindness and concern is every way. You may remember too Marjorie your warm hospitality at your home to John Schaw and myself on several occassions we visited Ottawa in theose early days. John Schaw and George Khachatourians, the third founder of the comapny join me in sending you our warmest thoughts of comfort. As Gearge said to me this morning: "may Bill enjoy the Peace of his new home". John Cross
