Passed away peacefully in Ottawa on February 18 at the Age of 97. Husband of Marjorie (formerly Clarkson, née Brown) in their 30th year of marriage. Survived by two daughters, Judy Saunders (Ray) of Ottawa and Joanne Schneider (Robert Spurrier) of Highland Grove, Ontario; his grandchildren, Kristen Bassett (Matthew) of Ottawa, Ryan Connolly of Toronto, and Trevor Connolly of Ottawa, and great grandsons, Liam, Rhys and Miles. Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Jean Purves. He will be missed by his sister, Margaret of Ottawa, other relatives across Canada and friends. Bill had a distinguished career in science at the National Research Council. His pioneer work in research on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) led to widespread use of diagnostic imagery (MRI) and was recognized at the opening of the W.G. Schneider Building at NRC for NMR research. He was President of the National Research Council from 1967 to 1980, a Fellow of the Royal Societies of London and Canada, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. A memorial reception will be held at the Reception Centre of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre of the Beechwood Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Saturday, February 23rd from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.
