STRATH, John William (Jack)
Passed away peacefully at 89 years of age on Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Toronto in 1923 to the late Dr. John Strath and Laura O'Neill. He enlisted with the RCAF in 1942 and was awarded his pilot's wings in 1943. He completed a tour of operations with Squadron 166 RAF and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II.
After the war, Jack pursued a classical education and subsequently taught at Loyola College in Montreal before his love of flying brought him back to work as an air survey pilot in Ottawa. This career path led him to Calgary where he spent approximately 30 years as an executive in the energy and resource sector and established many lasting friendships. He moved back to Ottawa in 1990 where he remained involved as an investor and entrepreneur in oil, mining and aviation businesses.
Jack is survived by his loving wife Joyce (nee Cody), his sons Michael and Gerard, daughters Julie (Gary Vickery) and Lori (Kevin Brady) and his grandchildren Brenden, Sean (Alicia), Emilie and his loving sister Eileen. Predeceased by his sister Margaret.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Perley for all their warmth and gentle compassion in caring for Jack in his
final weeks.
Visitation will be held at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa on Thursday, August 22nd from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church,
685 Walkley Road, Ottawa on Friday, August 23rd at 10 a.m.
