Jean and Wally Dicks were Super Hosts in our neighborhood Every Christmas morning for years.
Our close neighborhood poured in for breakfast starting about 10 am after each family had at home completed present opening, stuffed their turkeys into numerous ovens and happily settled into Wally's fresh cooked full breakfast served in order of our arrival while visiting and exchanging Christmas morning details. Talk about hospitality! Once we exited to continue our home family dinners with guests, the Dicks too moved onto their family dinner with guests. All of this was carried off with fun and warmth and remains in the Christmas memories of so many. As a child, who knew this special day's hospitality was not being played out in many neighborhoods?
I am so thankful to have grown up in such a closely knit, caring neighborhood and for the wonderful memories. Today the neighborhood has turned into mansions built on our large lots 7 minutes from downtown where both husbands and wives now go daily to pay for these expensive homes. I wonder if they have time for the close neighborhood friendships we shared. Or an in home community Christmas day breakfast?
"We don't know what we've lost till it's gone."
I'm wishing all the Dicks continued good times.

Dear Jon,
I know that your Mom was pretty special and this is a sad time for you. But you have many shared memories with her as do your children and eventually those recollections will become a rich part of your life.
Please accept my sympathy.
