WOJCIECHOWSKI, Professor Jerzy A.
Passed away Wednesday, August 6, at 89 years of age. He is survived by his wife Cécile Cloutier (writer and professor), daughters Maria (wife of Hiro Shibuya) and Eve, his grandson Isao Alexandre Shibuya, his sister- in-law Rachel Cloutier-Vigneault and her family, and many friends. Born in Brzesc in Poland, he was the son of Roman Wojciechowski and Antonina Widawska. He received the Polish Cross of Valour for his service in the underground Home Army in Poland during the Warsaw Uprising, where he was twice wounded. After his studies at Warsaw Technological University and at Université de Louvain, he completed a doctorate magna cum laude at Université Laval. He pursued his academic career as Professor at the University of Ottawa's Department of Philosophy, was conferred the title Professor Emeritus, and awarded an Honorary Doctorate from The International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research & Cybernetics. He chaired many conferences and lectured at over sixty universities in Canada and overseas. Among his numerous distinguished positions, he was the President of the Ottawa Chapter of the Humanities Association of Canada; Fellow of the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research; member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Committee on External Relations of the Humanities Research Council of Canada; and appointed the First Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Philosophical Association. He was Vice-President of the Canadian Polish Congress and also a board member of the Polish Canadian Research Institute. He was awarded the Officer's Cross of Polonia Restituta by the Polish government. He is the originator of the theory of the ecology of knowledge, and published his book 'Ecology of Knowledge' in 2005. He is cited in the 'Canadian Who's Who'. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor), Ottawa on Friday, August 15 from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Hyacinth Church, 201 LeBreton Street North in Ottawa (tel: 613-230-0804). The family wishes to thank the staff at the Alta Vista Manor and the Ottawa General Hospital for their unrelenting care.
