Peter TOWE Obituary
OC, MA, LLD (Hon)
Peter, born in London, Ontario, died at the age of 92 on January 29, 2015, after a brief hospitalization, as a result of a fall. He is survived by his devoted wife Carol; three children: Christopher (Susan), Fredericka and Jennifer Courteau (Thomas); and four grandchildren: Megan and Maxwell Towe and Alexander and Nicole Courteau. Predeceased by his sister Betty Urquhart. Peter served in World War II overseas in the RCAF as a flying officer with the Royal Canadian Bomber Command, piloting Halifax bombers. After returning home, he completed his B.A. at the University of Western Ontario, then went on to earn his Masters in Economics at Queen's University. Upon graduation, Peter began his 34–year career in public service, entering the Department of External Affairs. He served in a wide range of posts in Ottawa and abroad, and his career in public service culminated with an ambassadorship in Paris with the OECD, assignment as Assistant Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, and a five- year appointment as Canadian Ambassador to the United States. In 1981, he left public service and was appointed Chairman and CEO of Petro-Canada International Assistance Corporation, a position which he held until his retirement in 1992. In 1994, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Peter was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, he enjoyed taking his family for vacations while a member of the Five Lakes Fishing Club, and wintered happily with his wife for many years in Florida. Peter will be deeply missed by all for his charm, his wry wit, and his love of family. Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, (at O'Connor) Ottawa, on Saturday, February 7 at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow. Those wishing, are welcome to make donations in Peter's name to the Canadian Institute for the Blind or the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
