Earl Paul Schmidt

Earl Paul Schmidt was the son of John K and Emma B. Schmidt. Born May 16, 1922, Died Nov. 23, 2012, as a result of a serious fall and Parkinson's Disease. He graduated from Midland High School in 1941, worked at Dow Chemical for 1-1/2 years, then enlisted in the Navy. He earned the rank of Chief Machinist Mate. Earl served 3 years and 3 months during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Auburn to open Earl's IGA grocery store which he ran for 18 years. In 1965 he returned to his machinist trade for 20 years, working in several machine shops in Saginaw and Midland. He married Irene Kernstock on Nov. 2, 1947. They had five children; Daniel (Jill) of South Lyon, Mich., Rubin (Mary) of Holland, Mich., Roger(Gerianne) of Auburn, Mich., Lori (Bill) Sickenberger of E. Greenville, Pa., and Louise Kay. He has 3 grandchildren; Ian (Carrie) Schmidt, Hans (Sherry) Schmidt, and Katrina (Dr. Paul Berg). 4 great grandchildren; Daniel; Lucas, Matthew, and Kaitlyn Berg. Earl was predeceased by his four sisters, Leona, Edna, Irene, Emma; his daughter, Louise and his four brothers, Harold, J. Elmer, Lorraine, and James. He is survived by one brother, John of Saginaw. Earl was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church and held many church offices. He was also a member of the VFW Post No. 6950 in Kawkawlin. He retired in 1984 and spent his time fishing at Sanford Lake and making wooden games. He also enjoyed deer hunting until five years ago.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at Grace Lutheran Church (Price & Ruth Sts.) Auburn. Rev. David H. Reed will officiate. There will be a private burial at Home Cemetery. Earl's family will receive friends at the Auburn Chapel of the Cunningham-Taylor Funeral Homes, Inc. on Monday, Nov. 26 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the Church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, the Toni & Trish Home, The Lutheran Hour, Advantage Hospice or the donor's favorite charity.
