George Barber

The Lord took George to heaven to reunite him with the love of his life, Rosalee, on Feb. 5, 2013. George passed peacefully, at home with his loved ones surrounding him. He was born on Aug. 19, 1928, in Midland, son of the late Frederick and Lois (Dunn) Barber. George married his love, Rosalee Smith, on Dec. 10, 1949, in Shepherd.

George was an avid golfer. He spent the last 13 years of his life golfing and bowling. He had many friends that he enjoyed these sports with. George graduated from Midland High School in 1948. He played baseball, basketball and football while in high school. George went on after high school to play fastpitch softball for Nick's in 1963, 1964, and 1965. On Oct. 25, 2003, he was inducted into the Midland County Sports Hall of Fame for his participation in the 1963 and 1964 season. George also played for the Homer Methodist Church softball team.

George served in the National Guard and received an honorable discharge in 1954. He played for the softball team in the National Guard as well. George was a great hitter, and was well liked by all of his teammates.

George was a wonderful father and grandfather, loved by all. He is survived by his children, Lois (Steve) Thomas, Pamela (Bill) Johnson, Michael F. Barber and George E. Barber,Jr.; nine grandchildren, Tammy Kaiser (James Robishaw), Kendra (Kent) Nichols, Billy Johnson, Troy Johnson (Heather Wallace), Michael (Valarie) Barber, Jennie Barber, Jolynn Barber, Zackary Barber and Ted Swift. He also has nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Milton (Lillian) Barber; and his sister, Myra Fleming; and numerous nephews and nieces, who all adored him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalee; his parents; his sister, Dennie Young; his brother, Fred Barber; and his brother-in-law, Terry Fleming.

Funeral services for George will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland. Pastor David Howard of Holy Mission Ministries in Saginaw will officiate. George's family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
