Helen Wakefield, 81, of rural St. Johns, died on Jan. 30, 2013, following a battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 28, 1931, in Gladwin County, the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Romatz) Rydman. She graduated from Beaverton High School and worked for General Telephone Co. as a telephone operator then as a frame person.
Helen was very active in the Greenbush United Methodist Church, and she enjoyed gardening, canning, was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles and sewing, riding her bicycle, going on road trips with her sisters and stopping at garage sales, and she especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
Helen is survived by son, Jay (Doreen) Wakefield of Ovid; daughters, Connie (Bob) Blackmer and Daria (Bruce) Aldrich both of St. Johns; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Bernice Miller, Barbara Bailer; and brother, Al (Jomac) Rydman all of Coleman. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Eric in 2001; and two brothers.
Memorial services were held at Greenbush United Methodist Church, Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. Pastor Mona Dye officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to Greenbush United Methodist Church or Sparrow Hospice. The family is being served by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422.
