Laurel Linda Smith

Laurel Linda Smith, 59-year-old resident of Higgins Lake, died Oct. 14, 2012, after a prolonged struggle with colon cancer.

Laurie, a 1970 graduate of Midland High School, graduated from Ferris State College in 1972 with an executive secretarial degree and worked for several years in that capacity. Laurie also owned and operated various custom framing and art galleries.

Laurie was a private pilot and owned and flew a Vultee BT-13B World War II Navy training aircraft named Vintage Vibrations. She was an avid scuba diver and was part of the Roscommon Michigan Sheriff's Dive Team, and was a passionate advocate for Higgins Lake. Laurie was active in the Higgins Lake Property Owners Association and also the Higgins Lake Foundation, along with many activities at the lake. Laurie was an accomplished artist and photographer and labeled herself a dreamer and a writer as well.

Laurie was preceded in death by her father, James Parley Smith DDS (1961); and her mother, Catherine (Griswold) Smith Elliott (2006); and by her special feline friend, Merlin.

Laurie is survived by her sister, Valerie Smith; brother-in-law, James Dobben; stepfather, The Rev. William Elliott; stepsister, Beth Elliott Karns; niece, Ashley Karns; stepbrother, Tate Elliott; stepdaughters, Stefanie (Tudor) Luginbuhl and Emily (Tudor) Probst; "adopted" son RJ Bolzman; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. Laurie will be especially missed by the Rye Family, Terry Rye-Eisele, Doug Eisele, Trina Eisele, Sarah Rosenblum, Robert, Jenny, Alex and Savannah Rye and Walter Rye.

At Laurie's request cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering for Laurie will be Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at 1 p.m., with a service at 2 p.m., followed by light refreshments at the Ralph A MacMullan Conference Center at Higgins Lake Michigan. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Higgins Lake Foundation, the Roscommon County Sheriff for the Dive Team, or colon cancer research.
