Lewis Smith Mounts

Lewis Smith Mounts died on May 13, 2013, in Columbus, Ohio after a long illness.

Lew was born Aug. 2, 1929, the son of Ward and Olive Mounts, in LaPorte, Ind. He was raised in New Carlisle, Ind. and graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1947. While attending Purdue University, Lew met and married Joyce Whitmer on Aug. 23, 1952. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Lew graduated from Purdue with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1954 and started working in the plastics department at The Dow Chemical Co. in Midland. Lew moved his family to the Netherlands in 1964 for a two-year assignment, then returned to Midland in 1966. In 1977, Lew was transferred to Dow's research facility in Granville, Ohio. He retired in 1986 as a development associate.

Lew's wife, Joyce, passed away in 1990 after a long battle with cancer. Lew married the former Sue Henry on Aug. 23, 1991, in Newark, Ohio.

In addition to Sue Henry Mounts, Lew is survived by his three children, Sue (Rowan) Smith of West Branch, Sandy (John) Anderson of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Mike (Diane) Mounts of Midland. Lew is also survived by four step-children, Nancee (Jay) Smith of Kennesaw, Ga., Doug (Kathy) Henry of Newark, Ohio, Brad Henry of Columbus, Ohio and Cinda (Josh) Henry-Kirk of Portland, Ore. Lew is survived by seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Lew was also excitedly waiting the birth of twin great-grandchildren.

Lew was an avid golfer and card player, and enjoyed bowling and skiing. He also enjoyed traveling extensively and visited many countries throughout the world. Most of all, Lew loved spending time with his family and he always had a kind word for everyone he met.
