Paul C. Gatrell, 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014. Paul was born in Sisterville, W.Va., to the late Oliver and Rose (Conklin) Gatrell on Aug. 12, 1925. He moved to Mount Pleasant when he was ten years old and met his future wife, Dorothy at that time. Paul graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1943.
Upon graduation, Paul was selected for the Navy V-12 Officer Candidate Program. He graduated as an Ensign from the University of Michigan
in 1945. Before serving in Pearl Harbor, Paul married Dorothy Ruth Freeman on Feb. 24, 1946. They were married for 62 years. Dorothy preceded him in death in 2008.
Paul and Dorothy moved to Midland in 1948 when he began teaching math at Midland High School. He retired in 1985 after 36 years of teaching. Paul was an active volunteer. His most rewarding venture was volunteering for four years, with his wife, at Pinecrest County Farms filling their greenhouse with plants and working with the residents. He was a member of Midland Reformed Church.
Paul leaves behind his son Jim and wife Peggy; his beloved grandson Cameron (Aimee) Gatrell; and great-grandchildren Drake, Grady and Della of Lake Isabella. He is also survived by other grandchildren, Jay (Wendi) Gatrell; their children Carley and Laney and Christy Wall; her children Jaden, Noah and Reese; his adopted Midland family Nancy Metz and daughters Kera and Kaily; and his very special family at the Midland Reformed Church.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place with a private burial of his and Dorothy's urn in Midland Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Midland Reformed Church. Funeral arrangements for Paul have been entrusted to the care of the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Directors.
