Phillip Welling

Phillip Welling, 87, of Midland, formerly of Merrill, died Monday evening, Feb. 4, 2013, at Brittany Manor. He was born April 16, 1925, in Wheeler, son of the late Clarence and Glennie (White) Welling and attended schools in Wheeler. On June 29, 1946, he married the former Jane Stollsteimer in Merrill. She survives him.

Mr. Welling was employed as a supervisor at The Dow Chemical Co. in Midland for many years before his retirement. After his retirement, he and his wife wintered in New Port Richey, Fla. for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Midland and enjoyed gardening and fixing things. His special passion in his later years was being "Grandpa" to his granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

Surviving besides his wife, Jane, is his daughter, Ruth Ann Kennedy and her husband David, of Beaverton, formerly of Merrill; two granddaughters, Michelle Kraut of Bay City and Cindy Bartholomew and her husband Robert of Brighton; four great-grandchildren, Paige, Hunter, Bowen and Sophia. Also surviving are his three sisters, Mary Fisher and Catherine Ferguson, both of Florida; and Lillian Keinath of Arizona; and his sister-in-law, Onalle Welling of Saginaw. In addition to his parents, Mr. Welling was preceded in death by two brothers, Neil and Frank Welling; and two sisters, Beatrice Bury and Harriet Balgavy.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland. The Rev. Dr. Charles Keyworth will officiate, with committal services at 2 p.m. in the Ridgelawn Cemetery in Breckenridge. Mr. Welling's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m., and on Friday from 10 a.m. until services. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the First United Methodist Church or Heartland Hospice.
