Murland "Butch" Hammond, 81, of Midland, our beloved husband and father, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, Feb. 22, 2014 at Tendercare of Midland.
He was born Oct. 21, 1932 in Midland, son of the late Lewis and Alice (Tower) Hammond. He served his country for two years with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was employed by the Dow Chemical Co.
On July 11, 1953 he married his wife of 60 years, the former Anna May Steed. After his discharge from the Army he returned to Dow where he was employed for 38 years, retiring in 1989. He had a keen zest for life, especially for his church, from being a board member, building churches, repairing parsonages, working with and entertaining the youth to lawn mowing and snow plowing. Serving the Lord was his delight.
Surviving besides his wife, Anna May, is his daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Leland Rosier of Grand Ledge; his sisters, Alice Hepinstall of Midland and Beverly (Leo) Clark of Freeland; his brother, Max (Joyce) Hammond of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters-in-law Betty Hammond of Sault St. Marie, Canada; Sharon Hammond of Freeland; and former sister-in-law Alice Hammond Wellborn.
Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Butch was predeceased by an infant brother, Lewis Hammond Jr., sisters and brothers-in law Marguerite and Harold Haag, Clara and Frank Dale, brothers and sister-in law Dee and Darlene Brownell, Arneth Hammond, Carlton Hammond and brother-in-law Bobby Hepinstall.
Funeral and committal services will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler St. Midland.
Pastor Jeremy Screws of the Assembly of God Church in Oil City will officiate. Burial will take place in the Kelly Cemetery. Butch's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the services. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the donor's favorite charity.
