Donna Lucille Jakeway, 81, of Freeland, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 15, 2013, at Stone Crest Assisted Living in Freeland after a courageous battle with leukemia. Donna was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Tiffin, Ohio, to the late Wilbur and Mildred (McConnahay) Van Gilder and resided in Freeland since 1974.
Donna served as a captain and nurse with the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and later retired from nursing after 15 years at Mid-Michigan Health Center-Midland. Donna was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was actively involved in both the Midland Michigan Kennel Club and Tri-City Dog Training Club.
She was preceded in death by both her husband, Walter A. Jakeway, who she married on Dec. 22, 1962; and her twin brother, Dean Van Gilder. Donna is survived and will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Claudia (Steven) Flattery of Freeland and Carrie (Paul) DeWaele of Katy, Texas; her five grandchildren, Sean and Shane Flattery and Sarah, David and Jack DeWaele; close family friends, Pete and Sue Van Haaren; and her much-loved pets, Rags and Kitty.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in Freeland. The Rev. Robert G. Schmidt will officiate. Donna's family will receive friends at the Freeland Chapel of the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington Ave., Freeland, on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, from 3-8 p.m. and at Zion Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
