Edward L. Messersmith, 80, of Au Gres and Mt. Juliet, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tenn. Edward was born June 11, 1932, in Ithaca, to the late Eugene and Fannie Messersmith.
Edward joined the U.S. Navy
, 1952-1956 and proudly served on the U.S.S. Duncan. He returned to Midland to join his father and brothers at Messersmith Printing. He married the late Betty Jo Vennard of Midland in 1956. After retiring in 1980, he moved his family to AuGres to reestablish the family printing trade, where he reopened Messersmith Printing.
Edward was an avid bowler, loved to fish and mine for gems across the country. Edward was also a member of the VFW
Post 8275 in AuGres, where he served as Commander and spent many years calling bingo. Edward was a member of the Dave Winslow Quartet of Midland and enjoyed playing his music for family and friends.
Edward is survived by his five children, Gene Lee Messersmith, Rosemarie (Rick Richmond) Messersmith, Josie (Bob) Hill, Mark (Leann) Messersmith and Stanley (Richard DÃ¼mmer) Messersmith; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Janet) Messersmith and Donald (Debbie) Messersmith; sister, Sharron (Maynard) Hyer; and Karen (wife of late brother William Messersmith); and many nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Betty Jo Messersmith in 1997; and brother, William Messersmith in 2010.
Visitation will take place Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, from 2-8 p.m. at the C.L. Forshee & Sons Funeral Homes, Inc. in AuGres, and again on Monday, 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Pastor Frederick T. Cordts will officiate. Interment will follow in Linwood Cemetery with military honors.
