Robert (Bob) L. Basket, 78, died peacefully at home on Dec. 29, 2012, after a long and courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. He celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary with his wife, Regina, and family the day before on December 28.

Bob was born, the youngest of three boys, on June 16, 1934, in Ironwood, to the late Alfred and Ann (Cichon) Basket. He was a 1952 graduate of Luther L. Wright (Ironwood) High School, worked briefly as a switchman for the Chicago NW Railroad, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior, graduating in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. He served as a cook and radar operator in the National Guard from 1952-1960 and taught school for a few years before taking a position as an investigator with the Michigan State Liquor Control Commission in 1960, retiring in 1997. He was active in many community organizations, including the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, and was a charter member of the Auburn Area Lions Club. Bob enjoyed spending time on the water and fishing, woodworking projects, watching his grandkids play sports, and rooting for the Detroit Tigers.

Bob is survived by his wife, Regina (Haranda); daughters, Margaret of Madison, Wis., Michelle of Atlanta, Ga.; and son, Mark (Amy) of Essexville. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas and Sarah Basket. He is survived by brothers, David (Betty) of Bristol, Ind. and Mhyron (Connie) of Grand Rapids; brothers-in-law, Eugene (Lillian) Haranda of Pinconning, and Robert (Nell) Haranda of Statesboro, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Rita Haranda of Kawkawlin, Dorothy Pelton of Auburn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Arthur, Raymond and Clarence (Harry) Haranda; and sister-in-law, Joan Basket.

Despite the circumstances, Bob enjoyed interacting with the medical staff that cared for him. Special thanks to the staff of the Mid-Michigan Infusion Center at the Midland Hospital, the staff of Mid-Michigan Hospice, and his personal care assistants who cared for him at home. Thank you also to the family and friends who showed him and his family extraordinary support, including sending cards and prayers, during his life and illness.

In accordance with Bob's wishes, his body has been cremated.
