Valdo W. Shankel, 76, of Wheeler, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Alma.

Valdo was born Oct. 31, 1936, in Wheeler, the son of William "Lloyd" and Lillian (Helfer) Shankel, at the family homestead. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1955. Valdo married Nancy Rhoads on July 20, 1957, at the Edgewood Church of God.

He started working for The Dow Chemical Co. after high school and after his marriage he owned, with his father-in-law Merle, and brother-in-law, David, Rhoads and Shankel Hardware. Later Valdo, worked for L and Q Chevrolet and retired from Garber Chevrolet in Midland. He was a member of the Breckenridge United Methodist Church, former chairman of the Breckenridge/Wheeler Fire Rescue Board and Masonic Lodge 406. He enjoyed farming, hunting and spending time with his family at their cottage on Houghton Lake.

Valdo is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy, of Wheeler; daughters, Lorri (Rich) Tupica of Wheeler, Lynda (Dennis) Varner of Midland and Julie (Kyle) Bolt of Wheeler; 11 grandchildren, Rachel (Shawn) May, Michael (Jaime) Krueger, Sarah Krueger, Sarah (Jeremy) Berard, Angie (Alex) Mirkhani, Rachael (David) Wyman, Richard Tupica, Derek Varner, Katie Varner, Garrett Bolt and Justine Bolt; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb May, Lillian May, Lucas Fisher and Adelaide Varner. Valdo was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Aaron Varner; and brothers, Richard and Larry Shankel.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at 2 p.m., at the Breckenridge United Methodist Church, with Pastor Paul Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Breckenridge. Visitation will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 2-8 p.m. at the Lux and Whiting Funeral Chapel, Breckenridge.
