Robert E. Smith, 86, of Midland, died Friday morning, March 7, 2014, at the MidMichigan Medical Center. He was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Bay City, the son of the late Glenn E. and Neva (Smith) Smith. Robert was raised in Midland and was a graduate of Midland High School as well as a graduate of Michigan State University.

Robert was a Private in the U.S. Army and retired as a plant mechanic from The Dow Chemical Co. in 1982 after 31 years, having previously worked at the family businesses, Smith Dairy and Prince Jewelry, both of Midland. In 1950, he married the former Margaret Gooding, after her death in 1970 he later married the former Helen C. Sjolander.

Robert is survived by his children, son, Glenn M. (Mary) Smith of Kawkawlin; daughters, Linda L. Smith of Soldotna, Alaska., Robin J. Partin of Midland and Gerry (Al) Kuehne of McKinney, Texas; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and by his beloved friend and faithful companion, his dog ‘Pepper'. In addition to his parents and his wives, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Smith; and by sisters, Muriel Denton-Saxton, Edna Cummins, Ruth Manwell, Patricia Jean Smith, Barbara Smith, Sally Sommers, and Doris Smith.

Funeral services for Robert will take place 11 a.m., Tuesday morning, March 11, 2014, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Pastor John Seifert of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate, with cemetery committal services to follow in Midland Cemetery with military honors presented under the auspices of the Midland Area Veterans. Robert's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday afternoon from 5-7 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of the service.
