Hellen Doris Tower, 94, of Midland, died Tuesday morning, April 8, 2014, in Royal Oak. She was born in Columbia Falls, Mont., to Adolf Lauman and Hattie (Sorensen) Lauman.
Hellen was one of thirteen children. Hellen was married to Walter Burns Tower Dec. 29, 1934, and made their home in Kalispell, Mont., where they had two children, Betty Ardell and Robert Burns. They relocated to Michigan in 1939 where Walter worked for The Dow Chemical Co. for 37 years.
Hellen was the Deputy Register of Deeds until she retired. Hellen enjoyed many activities, including knitting and crocheting, card parties, Bingo games and the Rebecca Lodge. She always participated in many hobbies, side by side with Walter. These included riding her motorcycle, going to car races, co-piloting with Walter in their own airplane, snow skiing and road rallies in their Corvette.
Over their retirement years, they traveled together through all but three of the United States. Sometimes she and Walter would return to Montana where Hellen would visit with her family while Walter hunted in the mountains with some of Hellen's brothers.
Hellen and Walter enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Missaukee Lake, Mich. Then in 1984, Hellen and Walter began spending winters in Mesa, Ariz., where they bought a home. They especially loved having Betty and Kelly spend portions of their winter months in Arizona with them.
After Walter passed in 2002, Hellen then stayed with Betty and Kelly in Southfield, but still spent winters in Arizona while Betty flew back and forth every two and a half weeks to ensure that Hellen had everything she needed for comfort. Hellen is survived by her daughter, Betty; her granddaughter, Kelly; her son, Robert; grandson, Christopher; and granddaughter, Lori.
Funeral services for Hellen will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Chaplain Roger Stauffer will officiate, with burial in Midland Cemetery.
Mrs. Tower's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until time of service.
