Clarence Frederick Smith, Jr. (Bud), 76, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 in Lakeland, Fla.
Clarence was born Nov. 14, 1937 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Clarence Frederick, Sr. and Ida (Nelson) Smith. Clarence graduated from Weidman High School in 1955, continuing his education at Central Michigan, Michigan State and Bowling Green University, where he accomplished his doctoral course work. Following his undergraduate graduation, Clarence worked as a teacher and then becoming Superintendent of Schools in Grass Lake, Bullock Creek and assistant Superintendent in West Branch, where he retired.
Clarence married the love of his life, Ruth Ann Bechdolt Feb. 11, 1955 in Mt. Pleasant.
He was a member of Lions and MESPERS. Clarence enjoyed music, the outdoors, stained glass work and will always be remembered for his kindness, ethics and hard work.
Clarence is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Ann; and daughter, Roxann Bonta of Lakeland.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
Funeral services for Clarence will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Thursday, May 15, at 11 a.m., with Pastor John Van Dop of the United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Two Rivers Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14, from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to The National Audubon Society, ASPCA, or The Central Florida Speech and Hearing Center. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
