Mari Kay West, 40, of Sanford, died Tuesday evening, May 31, 2011, at the Mid-Michigan Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. She was born April 13, 1971, in Pigeon, daughter of James Sidney "Sid" and Kay Elaine (Lukasiak) Smith of Bay Port. Mari Kay was a 1989 graduate of Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School and later received her bachelor of arts degree in 1993 from CMU. On Dec. 11, 1993, she was married to Robert West in Pigeon. He survives her. Mari Kay taught third grade at St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic School in Midland for eight years. She was a member of the St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church. Mari Kay enjoyed the summer months, especially going to the beaches, but most of all enjoyed being with and caring for her family.
Surviving besides her parents and husband, are her daughter, Gabrielle, and her twin boys, Zachary and Austin; four brothers and their spouses; James "Dean" and Nancy Smith of Bay Port; Scott and Nancy Smith of Pigeon; Todd and Lisa Smith of Northville, and Jeff and Sandi Smith of Bay Port.
The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, June 6, 2011, from St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church in Midland. Fr. Nick Coffaro, Fr. Jose Parra, Fr. James Wm. Bessert, and Deacon Aloysius Oliver will concelebrate the mass, with Rite of Committal to take place at 2:30 p.m., Monday, in Sanford Cemetery.
Mari Kay's family will receive friends at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. in Midland, on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Visiting hours will conclude Sunday evening with a Vigil Service to be conducted at 7 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Toni and Trish House, P.O.
