Nellie Marie (Wise) Henry, 98, of Midland, died on April 10, 2012, at Colonial Villa in Midland.
Nellie was born on June 9, 1913, in Larkin Township, daughter of the late Ezra and Bertha (Rumler) Wise. She graduated from Midland High School in 1931, after which she worked for Oviatt's Bakery for six years, and then for The Dow Chemical Co. for four years. Nellie married her sweetheart, John Henry, on Aug. 9, 1941, in Hope. He preceded her in death on April 13, 2001.
Nellie was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and C.W.G.A. Golf Association. She spent much of her time with her husband, fishing at their former cottages at Manistique Lake and Houghton Lake. She also loved traveling, canning, knitting, crocheting, sewing and working in her garden.
Nellie was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Nellie is survived by her sons, Allen (Barbara V.) and Marvin (Barbara E.) both of Midland; four grandchildren, Christopher Henry of Grand Rapids, Marlou (Christopher) Collins of Grand Rapids, Susannah of Boston, and Sarah (Garret) VanGessel of Grand Rapids; and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Zachery Collins. Nellie was preceded in death by her two brothers, Harold and Robert.
A funeral service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 14, 2012, with The Rev. Paul Murphrey officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, on Friday from 4-7 p.m., and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will take place in Midland Memorial Gardens. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Gideon's International, Calvary Baptist Church or the Salvation Army.
