Madeline Ruth Sterling, 96, of Midland, died April 1, 2013, at the Mid-Michigan Medical Center. She was born Aug. 6, 1916, in Flint, daughter of the late Leo and Norma (Buder) Bush. Madeline attended Flint schools, graduating from Flint Central High School on June 6, 1934.

The former Madeline Bush married Thomas Sterling on Oct. 22, 1938, at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Flint. Mr. Sterling died in 1976.
Madeline is survived by one son, Richard (Rebecca) Sterling of Midland; grandsons, Thomas and William Sterling; brothers, Raymond Bush M.D. and Joseph Bush J.D.; and by several nieces and nephews.
Madeline worked at her father's business (Working Man's Coal Company), A.C. Spark Plug, Cliff Sackrider Clothing, and Fred Sanders Candies in Flint. She also worked at American Golfers Club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Madeline was co-owner of Sterling Hardware in Flint. She was a member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church in Midland. She was a former member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sanford, Assumption BVM Catholic Church in Midland, Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Blanc, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Burton, and Happy Diners. In addition to her parents and husband, Madeline was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia LeClear.
Madeline's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St., on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. Burial will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, April 5, 2013, in New Calvary Cemetery in Flint.
