Daniel Nolan Oberhellman passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center after a courageous 16-month battle with a very aggressive form of bile-duct cancer. During his last hours he was surrounded by his loving family. He was 24 years old.

Dan was a remarkable young man with a dynamic personality and a unique charm that placed him in a category all by himself. Dan made a friend out of every person he ever met and was always the life of the party. He grew up in Midland. Dan played ice hockey for most of his youth until moving to Shanghai, China with his family during his high school years. Dan spent three years attending the British International School of Shanghai (BISS) where he was a co-captain of BISS's varsity rugby team for two seasons, and also played the lead role of Danny Zuko in the school's performance of the classic musical "Grease." He graduated from BISS in May of 2010. He met many of his closest friends while living overseas, several of whom remained in close contact with him even during his last days.

Dan packed more life into his 24 years than most people are able to do in an entire lifetime. He travelled all over the world to some of the most exotic destinations, saw some of the world's most beautiful beaches, and was able to experience many unique adventures that most people can only dream of. He was always immaculately dressed in the latest youthful fashions. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Red Wings, his favorite hockey team, and enjoyed spending time with his family watching them play.

Dan is survived by his parents, Ted and Jane (Roberts) Oberhellman of Midland; his older brother James Ryan Oberhellman of Indianapolis, Ind. (sister-in-law, Sarah); his paternal grandmother, Benita Oberhellman of Yorkville, Ill.; his maternal grandmother, Donna Roberts of Midland; uncle and aunt, Bob and Cathie (Roberts) Martelli of Midland, (cousins Krista and Kevin); uncle and aunt, Bruce and Sue (Roberts) Winslow of Midland, (cousin Claire); uncle and aunt, Mark and Becky Oberhellman of Tokyo, Japan (cousins Max and Ian); uncle and aunt, Scott and Denise Oberhellman of Port Huron; uncle and aunt, Tim and Lynn Ford of Aurora, Ill. (cousin Lauren); uncle, John Oberhellman of Fountain Hills, Ariz. (cousins Sydney and Brynn); and his dog, Bernie Frank, his loyal companion. Dan was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ted Oberhellman, Jr.; his maternal grandfather, James E. Roberts; and Sue and Bruce Winslow's infant twins.

Special thanks to his closest friends in Midland, Leurissa Fales, Logan Foos, and Jason Renz who faithfully supported him throughout his illness.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors in Midland. In keeping with Dan's wishes, a private family funeral service will be held.
