Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Lawrence R. Stanford, 91, died on Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital. 

Lawrence was born Oct. 11, 1922, to Glenn and Lulu (Jones) Stanford in Midland. He married Erma Ryal in 1946 and she preceded him in death in 2000.

Lawrence joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1942-1945 in the Armed Guard during World War II. He then served from 1948-1951 in the National Guard.  Lawrence worked as a researcher for The Dow Chemical Co. until his retirement in 1979. Upon retiring, he spent three years in Texas and the past years in Arcadia, Fla. Lawrence was an avid golfer and in his lifetime had three holes in one and was so proud of that. Lawrence was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Arcadia.

Lawrence is survived by daughters, Barbara Moore of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Peggy Martin of Pt. Charlotte, Fla.; grandchildren, LCDR Michael J. (Cheryl) Martin, USN, Lori and Rodger Lightfoot, Brett (Missy) Baum and Daniel (Amanda) Baum; as well as 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Edna Stanford of Midland; and special friend, Karolyn Medici of Arcadia, Fla.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erma; son, Larry Max; and sons-in-law, Charles M. Moore and Eugene Martin. He was also preceded in death by  his brothers, Fred, Bob, Joe, Frank, Willis and Dale; as well as his sisters, Mable Bates, Ima Churchfield, Helen Procunier and Nellie McLaren.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Smith-Miner Funeral Home, with The Rev. Kurt Eichinger of the Lord of New Life Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation for Lawrence will be Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Military honors will take place at the funeral home under the auspices of Midland County Veterans and the U.S. Navy. Burial will take place at Midland City Cemetery.
