Stephen Allen "Steve" Patchin

Stephen "Steve" Allen Patchin, of Midland, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017 following a brief illness. Born Feb. 9, 1927 in Watertown, S.D., he was the son of the late Lucile Goepfert Patchin and Sydney Allen Patchin.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Sylvia Patchin; his children and their spouses, Steve and Collette (Wilcowski) Patchin of Dollar Bay, Mich. and their children, Taylor, Sean, and Jake; Scott and Jennifer (Lindholm) Patchin of Holland, Mich., and their children, Ben, Ana, Mia and Aubrey.

Steve grew up in Hibbing, Minn. and graduated from Hibbing High School. Following graduation he served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended Hibbing Junior College and graduated from Stanford University where he received his B.S. in chemistry in 1951, and his MBA in 1953.

Steve moved to Midland in 1953 and spent over 30 years working for The Dow Chemical Co. in economic evaluation. He met Sylvia Haisley in Midland, and they were married on April 9, 1960 in Ann Arbor.

Following his retirement from Dow Chemical in 1986, Steve was a regular volunteer at the Friends of the Library and Junior Achievement. He attended Memorial Presbyterian Church. Steve was an avid reader, a golfer, a fisherman, a member of the Midland Curling Club and enjoyed traveling with family and friends.

Steve's family will miss his storytelling, his sense of humor and his kind heart.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tom Schacker officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, March 31, from 5-7 p.m. at Smith-Miner Funeral Home and on Saturday at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.
