News Death Notice
MCGEE, John Edward 87, of Middletown died peacefully at Atrium Medical Center on Thursday, May 2nd, surrounded by his family. He was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on July 7, 1925, the son of Essie (Broughton) and John Edward McGee. John grew up in Hot Springs where he earned his Eagle Scout rank from the Boy Scouts of America and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1943. From 1944 to 1946 he served in World War II with the 5th Division, 11th Infantry Regiment, E Company, earning a Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars. John saw active combat in the Ardennes Forest, the Rhineland, the Battle of the Bulge, Austria, and witnessed Matthausen Concentration Camps days after its liberation. John returned home to receive his undergraduate degree from Henderson State Teachers College, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he was President of his fraternity, Sigma Epsilon Phi; President of his Senior Class; and President of the campus ROTC. On June 3, 1951, he married the love of his life Betty Ann Benson of Hope, Arkansas. Three months later he was drafted to serve in the Korean War as a First Lieutenant and platoon commander in the 2nd Combat Infantry Division, where he was awarded a third Bronze Star for bravery before returning home to earn a Masters in Economics from the University of Arkansas in 1954. John enjoyed a 30 year career with Armco Corporation, beginning with the Sheffield Company in Kansas City, Missouri, and retiring in Middletown as Purchasing Manager for all Armco Corporate Division plants. John was an avid fisherman, amateur ornithologist, a member of the Lions Club, a member of the American Scrap Iron and Steel Institute, and a consultant to national steel companies after retirement. Mr. McGee is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty; three daughters Marcia McGee of Carlsbad, California; Lisa and husband Bob Hill of Dallas, Texas; and Julie and husband Tom Barber of Middletown; six grandchildren Ryan Gaker of Denton, Texas; Adam Leighton of Washington, D. C. and Sarah Leighton of Middletown; Holden Blumhagen of Vista, California; Michael Barber of Ft. Wright, Kentucky, and Brad Barber of Middletown; and brother, Robert McGee of Dallas, Texas. ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation Monday, May 6th, 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by Memorial Service 11:00 a.m., both at First United Methodist Church, 123 S. Broad St., Middletown, Ohio, Rev. John Wagner officiating. The family suggests donations to the National Parkinson's Association or First United Methodist Church of Middletown, Ohio.
