A. Leroy Atkins

RICHMOND, Ind. - A. Leroy Atkins, 78, of Richmond, died June 13, 2011, at Reid Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 30, 1932, in Richmond to Samuel Porter and Hester Ridout Atkins and lived in Richmond most of his life.

Leroy formerly worked as district manager of Pacific Finance and retired from Holthouse Furniture where he was credit manager. He also retired from Seton West Elementary School, and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he served on Parish Council and St. Mary's Cemetery committee. He was a member and past Grand Knight of the Richmond Council 580 Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Wayne County Republican Party. He volunteered for Circle U, Reid Hospital, Meals on Wheels and the National Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

He was a wonderful husband and father. Survivors include his cherished frie,nd, Joan Steinberger of New Paris, Ohio; five children Deidra (Bill) Smith of Frankfort, Eric (Liz) Atkins of Indianapolis, Lisa Atkins of Millington, Tenn., Peter (Sandy) Atkins of Millington, Tenn., and Kara Stevens (Rick Fintak) of Richmond; 11 grandchildren, Amanda, Chris, Andrew, Kevin, Katie, Emily, Marissa, Matthew, Nathan, Dara and Sam, two great-grandchildren, Anna and Clayton; his brother, Don (Shirley) Atkins of Richmond; two sisters, Joyce Conway and Sharon Schwartz of Richmond; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and his brother- in-law, Dennis (Marie) Thompson of Albany.

His loving wife of 50 years, Nancy, died Sept. 26, 2006; and his parents are also deceased.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Todd Riebe officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home.
