Robert Denver Cheek

RICHMOND, Ind. - Robert Denver Cheek, 82, of Richmond, died June 25, 2011, at Golden Living Center Golden Rule after a long illness. He was born Dec. 1, 1928, in Union County to Walter and Millie Ballinger Cheek and lived in the Richmond area most of his life.

He retired from Avco (Crosley) after working 29 years and Wayne Corp. after 16 years. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1953 to 1954 as a Corporal with the Alaska Quarter Master Depot at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was a 1946 graduate of Richmond High School.

He was a member of the former Chester Heights United Methodist Church and a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was editor and publisher of the Renal News Newsletter. He was a former member and past treasurer of the Fountain City Lions Club. He enjoyed his family and the time he spent with them.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nellie Cummins Hays Cheek, whom he married Nov. 7, 1952; fiive children, Larry (Linda) Hays of Richmond, Tonja (Erwin) Cole of Williamsburg, Dianna Cheek of Richmond, Marilyn (Scott) Mandernack of Franksville, Wis., and Sharon (David) Lilly of Clarksville; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one brother, Calvin Cheek of Greenville, Ohio; one sister, Eula Therrien of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by one son Robin; his parents; two brothers, Earl and Harry Cheek; and two sisters, Helen and Mildred Cheek.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home with Rev. James Truelove and Rev. Phillip Dorrell officiating. Burial will be in Elkhorn Cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
