Howard T. Deacon

EATON, Ohio - Howard Thomas Deacon, DVM, also known to friends and family as "Deac" or "Doc,' of Eaton, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at Vancrest of Eaton at the age of 89.

He was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Bellaire (Pike County), Ohio, to the late Floyd and Madge (Brawley) Deacon.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Emily (Benson) Deacon; his parents; his brother, Raymon Deacon; brother-in-law, Paul Hollinger; and great-grandson, Jacob Deacon.

Howard graduated from New Madison High School in 1940 and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1945. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Veterinary Medical Corps from 1946-1948. Following his discharge from the Army, he and his wife Emily came to Eaton where he started a decades-long large and small animal veterinary practice, retiring in 1989.

During those years, he was active in both the Ohio and the American Veterinary Medical Associations. He served as a member of the Eaton School Board from 1954-1969 and from 1990-1995. He maintained an active interest in the Eaton City Schools and was involved in many projects supporting the school system throughout his years. He was a founding member of the Preble County Humane Society. He was an active member of the Eaton United Church of Christ and its choir for many years. He was a member of both the Lions and the Investor's Clubs.

Howard is survived by his daughter, Christine Deacon of Eaton; sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Cris Deacon of Eaton, Thomas and Naomi Deacon of California, and Bradley and Jill Deacon of Arizona; grandchildren, Bryan (wife Kelley) Deacon, Andrea (husband Kyle) Kolopanis, Carrie (husband Eric) Laspe, Nicole Deacon, William Deacon, Sean Deacon, Hannah Deacon and Kyle Deacon; and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Madison, Bryan Michael and Cadence; sisters, Doris Hollinger, Ruth Deacon and Helen (C. William) Swank; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Eaton United Church of Christ, 113 W. Decatur St., Eaton, Ohio, with Rev. Roger Stine officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today at the Girton Schmidt & Boucher Gard Funeral Home, 226 W. Main St., Eaton, Ohio, and one hour prior to services on Sunday at the church. Interment will be at Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, at the convenience of the family.
