Of Pahokee, FL, died peacefully in his sleep November 5, 2012, three weeks short of his 88th birthday. He was born in Miami, FL, November 28, 1924, and moved to Pahokee shortly thereafter. He graduated from Pahokee High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, where he served as a Staff Sergeant with the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division. He was wounded in Ludwenkle, Germany, and spent ten months recuperating in the hospital in England. He was awarded the Purple Heart
and Bronze Star
and returned to Austria and served as a guard in a German SS camp. He was discharged from the Army in April 1946 and married ?the prettiest girl in the Glades,? (his words) Elaine Baker, on July 21, 1946. David was a building contractor in the Glades and was involved in the building or remodeling of over 400 buildings, including hospitals, government buildings, schools, prisons, sugar cane laborer barracks, sugar warehouses and homes. He served on the City of Pahokee Zoning Board and was awarded the Citizen of the Year award by the Pahokee Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pahokee since the age of 12 and served as a deacon for 15 years and as Chairman of the Finance Committee. David was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and friend. He was easy to talk to, funny and loved sweet little Hayden. He was preceded in death by Elaine, his wife of 57 and a half years and his son, Dr. D. Hal Unwin, Chief of Neurology at Parkland Hospital and a stroke specialist at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Survivors include his sister, Betty Hitchcock of Alachua, FL; daughter, Jan Unwin and husband, Mac Carver of Live Oak, FL and Hendersonville, NC; and his dear, long-time companion, Lorrie Sparks. Graveside services will be held Friday, November 9, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Port Mayaca Cemetery where he will rest next to his wife and son.
