BURD, Jr., Harold F.

Harold F. Burd Jr., 91, of Lakeland, FL formerly of Washington, NJ and Boynton Beach, FL, passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 28, 2014. Born January 4, 1923 in Belvidere, NJ to the late Harold F., Sr. and Beth Widenor Burd, he was a graduate of Washington High School and attended Lafayette College until his enlistment in the US Army in 1943. Harold served in the 87th Infantry Division during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He joined his father in the automobile business at Burd Chevrolet in Washington after the war and went on to own and operate other dealerships with his family until 1988. Harold was also the postmaster of Washington, NJ until retiring from the Post Office in 1984. He was past President and member of the Washington Rotary Club for more than 65 years. He was a 65 year member of the Free & Accepted Masons Mansfield Lodge No 36, the Warren County Forest Tall Cedars Lebanon #14, and the Shriners Crescent Temple of Trenton, NJ. Harold was also a member and past president of both the Postmaster Association and the 87 Infantry Division Association. He enjoyed music and was a gifted trumpet player as a young man; he also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Harkers Hollow Country Club in New Jersey for most of his life. He had a passion for travel and enjoyed many trips and cruises over the years. Loving survivors include daughters Bonnie Howell (husband Charles), Denise Flanagan, Beth Ann Joyce (husband Patrick), a brother Robert M. Burd (wife Fay), 3 grandchildren, Patrick Joyce, Ann Marie Manahan and Margaret DeFazio, 2 great-grandchildren Madeleine and Jack Manahan, as well as several nieces and nephews. Harold is predeceased by his wife of 49 years the former Margaret Jean Wattis and a sister Irene Burd Mooney. Visitation and services were held Monday July 7, 2014 at the Warren Hills Memorial Home, Washington NJ and the First Presbyterian Church of Washington, NJ. Burial was private in Washington NJ. A memorial service is planned for 11:00AM Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Hawthorne Inn of Lakeland Assisted Living, 6150 Lakeland Highlands Rd., Lakeland, FL 33813. The family greatly appreciates the loving care Harold enjoyed at the Hawthorne Inn in his final years. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Warren Hills Memorial Home.
