A champion golf and tennis player, he was a past member of Fresh Meadow Country Club in New York and a member of High Ridge Country Club in Florida. Philanthropy was a major part of his busy life. Among the charities he supported are: North Shore Hospital, UJA, Israel Guide Dogs Foundation, and various breast cancer
charities, including the Beth Tortolani Breast Cancer Foundation who, a few years ago honored him as man of the year. Irving always spoke with frankness and sincerity and was quick to work a pun or a joke into any conversation. He was a father figure to those close to him, an advisor to many and generous (almost) to a fault.
