PICANO, Jr., John Abbington
May 5, 1952 ? November 22, 2012 John Abbington Picano, Jr. passed away November 22, 2012. John was a native of Erie, PA and a resident for Fort Pierce, FL for 22 years. In 1976, he moved to West Palm Beach, FL and has been a resident for 36 years. John grew up in Ft. Pierce, FL where he was an all-star baseball player and an avid golfer. He was a graduate of Dan McCarty High School and Indian River Junior College. He attended the University of Florida
majoring in political science and was the personality for the afternoon drive on WRUF. From 1973-1974, he was the personality for WFTP/WLQY in Ft. Pierce, FL. In 1976, he became the News Director for WIRK. In 1979, John became the Program Director at WJNO where he consistently programmed one of the highest-ranked news/talk stations in the region for over 16 years. He became the Director of Public Relations for the South Florida Fair in 1996 and created and solely operated Picano Media, Co., in 1997, providing public relations services for copious businesses. John attended and ushered at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Royal Palm Beach, FL. He was an active member in the community and board member of several organizations, including the West Palm Beach Kiwanis Club and the Leukemia, Palms West Chamber of Commerce and the Lymphoma Society of the Palm Beaches. John coached many seasons of his sons? little league baseball teams and enjoyed playing countless rounds of golf with family and friends. John was the 1992 Breakers West Club Champion after saving par on the final hole of the tournament. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Kathy Poorman Picano; oldest son, John Picano III; son, Jeffrey Scott Picano and wife, Anna Picano; daughter, Katy Picano and fiancé, Chad Morton; siblings and spouses, Sherry and Bruce Center, Mary Anne and Ric Huck. He adored his one granddaughter, Madison June Picano, and leaves behind many nieces and nephews. A memorial wake will be held Wednesday, November 28. 2012 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Palms West Funeral Home. A memorial mass will be held Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Royal Palm Beach, FL. Arrangements are under the direction of Palms West Funeral Home & Crematory. Memorial donations can be made to: Lymphoma & Leukemia Society of the Palm Beaches.
