former walk-on football player Lamar Abel, a Blanche Ely graduate who last played in 2008, has died.
Abel, 21, was volunteering with his fraternity at a roadside cleanup program in Gainesville on Saturday afternoon when he fell ill, university spokesman Steve Orlando told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. According to Orlando, Abel complained he wasn't feeling well when the service project was complete and was taken to Shands Hospital at UF Medical Center, where he died Saturday. The Miami Herald reported Abel died of cardiac arrest.
Abel, was a 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive lineman. He dressed for five games each in the 2007 and 2008 seasons and played in a game against The Citadel in 2008. Abel did not play with the Gators in 2009, instead choosing to focus on his schoolwork.
"We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news," offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said. "Lamar was a proud member of our program and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."
